The New York Daily News’ Adam Rubin reported today that Mets skipper Jerry Manuel opted to start Jeremy Reed over Gary Sheffield against Derek Lowe and the Braves last night to evaluate Reed.
When you have your ace on the mound and your team has been known to struggle on offense when he pitches, it’s not the time to start experimenting and evaluating people. That can be done in the next game.
Against Lowe, Sheffield has batted .471 with two homers and eight RBI. Now, I’ll be the first person to bash Sheffield, who has had a really slow start to the season, for not living up to his potential. And sure, Reed had a good night, going 2-for-3 and a walk. But in this instance you need to go with the numbers.
