Ryan Church, Ramon Castro and Carlos Delgado are getting the night off. Interestingly, Jerry Manuel opted not to start Gary Sheffield who, although he’s a right-handed batter, is batting .471 against Derek Lowe, the Atlanta Braves’ off-season righty starter. Reed, who is a lefty, is instead playing right field.

Lowe is one of those potential Mets starters who got away when he signed a $60 million contract with the Braves. He and Mets starter Santana have the same record but Lowe’s ERA is about four times higher. It should be a good pitching matchup.
