The Mets won their sixth game in a row and are now a half-game in front of the Philadelphia Phillies as they beat the other Pennsylvania team, the Pirates, 10-1 with an offensive explosion. The Mets had 17 hits with Jose Reyes leading the charge with three.
Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, Luis Castillo, David Wright, Gary Sheffield and Fernando Tatis all had two hits apiece. The Mets still managed to leave 18 men on base but only seven in scoring position. Beltran hit his sixth home run and Reyes had his ninth stolen base.
Despite admitting to not having a good bullpen session, starter John Maine six innings of one-run ball. New reliever Ken Takahashi pitched a scoreless two innings and struck out two. Brian Stokes finished out the last inning.
The Mets did all of this without manager Jerry Manuel, who was suspended one game after bumping umpire Bill Welke during Thursday’s game vs. the Phillies.
