Former Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos (remember him?) has been sentenced to nine months in jail for assaulting his girlfriend at the Holiday Inn near Shea Stadium on Sept. 8.
It’s always a little personally embarassing when a former player, especially one that was with the Mets as recently as December, gets in trouble, whether it be for steroid abuse or something worse, like slapping his girlfriend around.
I take a certain sense of pride in my favorite teams, whether they be professional or college. So, when players on those teams don’t live by general moral standards, it takes something away from my almost innocently optimistic view of those teams.
I want the players to conduct themselves during the off-season the way they might during the regular season. I just want to follow the teams’ progress to improve themselves with trades, drafts, signings and acquisitions. And I want to be able to do it without hearing about cheating scandals, steroid abuses, assaults and gunshots.
Is that so much to ask?
