A day after this blog ripped Luis Castillo for not exhibiting the renaissance everyone was talking about for him, he went out and a had monster game in game two of the Marlins series.
After having a special batting practice, Castillo went 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI. It was like his professional baseball future depended on his performance in that game and he played like it.
In today’s game, he was one of the only Mets to get a hit but he did commit an error. Fortunately, the error did not result in any runs. He also just barely missed beating out a bunt for a single.
That particular play had me wondering if it came from Jerry Manuel or he took it upon himself, which could be worrisome. His slapping hitting and fake bunting drives me crazy when I’d rather he just go up to the plate and swing away.
But just as four poor-performance games don’t predict a horrendous season, neither do two good games necessarily portend a bright future. Castillo will have to have many more games like Saturday’s to change people’s minds about him.
