According to ESPN.com, it was David Wright’s call to Gary Sheffield that utimately persuaded the former Yankee and Tiger to choose the Mets over the Phillies, Reds and Rays.
Sheffield also told ESPN.com that the playing in New York City again was also a big factor.

So, basically, if Sheffield doesn’t work out or causes a lot of headaches, we can blame Wright. You also have to wonder if that call will cause any rifts between Wright and those players who might be replaced by Sheffield or sent down to the minors to make way for him. Nick Evans most likely will start the season in the minors. Marlon Anderson might very well be the odd man out when Livan Hernandez gets called up to pitch.
