Today’s game was a much better display of pitching for the Mets as they held the Detroit Tigers to three runs off of five hits.
Today’s Mets starter Freddy Garcia went 2 1/3 innings, allowing two hits (one a homer) and two runs. Bobby Parnell fared much better in his 2 2/3 innings of work, giving up just one walk and fanning two.
The bats were hot again as centerfielder Cory Sullivan and first baseman Nick Evans each had two hits. They were trumped by Daniel Murphy who went 3-for-5, including a double. The hit parade also featured three home runs from Sullivan, Rene Rivera, blasting his second of the spring, and Jose Valentin, who is a making a case to return to the team in what might be his last shot. Reports indicate he might be a minor-league player/manager if he doesn’t make the roster.
The Mets next face Spring Training nemesis the Washington Nationals in St. Port Lucie on Saturday at 1:10 p.m. Mike Pelfrey is expected to take the mound, followed by Livan Hernandez, among others. Let’s see how Pelfrey does coming off a worrisome injury and if Hernandez can keep up with his World Baseball Classic performance.
