So Freddy Garcia, huh?

January
22

Reports indicate the Mets have come to terms with Freddy Garcia on an incentive-laden deal that could net him as much as $9 million. Garcia, of course, was once a middle-of-the rotation anchor, but he has made just 14 starts the last two seasons because of a torn labrum.

I have two questions:
1. This seems like a good risk-reward signing. Do you agree?
2. Does this close the door on Oliver Perez, or is Garcia, like Redding, just insurance?

I sure hope that Garcia is just insurance. I’m not really thrilled about this team’s playoff chances if they do bring in Oliver Perez.

Considering the way the off-season has gone so far, I’d guess Omar might be done.

This is a good pick up, but by no means the cherry on the top. I’m surprised at the lack of trades this off-season. I thought the Mets would be a bit more creative with the roster trade wise. Either way, the Mets need more pitching, and a bit more offense,,,,well clutch offense.

Good risk/reward but strictly insurance. in my opinion.

  4. George Fisher

Agree….low risk…high reward. Look for ‘leverage’ with both Perez and Sheets.

  5. Pedro

If Garcia is the 4 or 5, Redding goes to the pen. That’s good depth on the back end and in the pen. Now Sheets or Ollie need to be added to complete the staff. This is a terrific pick up.

    I believe this is insurance.
Garcia will be the sixth man in the rotation filling in for the starters as they become injured. Last season, El Duque missed the entire season, Pedro missed a third of the season, and Maine ended the season on the DL. Since then, Santana and Maine have had surgery. Pelfrey had a big increase in innings in 2008 and is likely to have problems in 2009.
    Santana
    Sheets (maybe Perez)
    Pelfrey
    Maine
    Redding
Garcia (followed by Figueroa, Bostick, Neise, and Parnell)

Last night MLB Network Bobby Valentine reported that the Mets are interested in left handed japanesse pitcher SHAM WOW.
