Ollie Perez and the GM meetings

Pete Abraham is covering for us at the GM meetings in California. Oliver Perez was one of the topics of conversation yesterday. Omar Minaya didn’t sound hopeful of getting anything done before Nov. 14 when the exclusive-rights period comes to an end, nor should he with Scott Boras as the agent. Boras held court and basically said he figures there will be significant interest in the lefty.
So what do you think? Should the Mets make an all-out pitch to retain him? For all his inconsistency, he does have a lot of talent. And he’s only 27. Personally, I’m not big on giving pitchers more than four years. Too fragile. What would be a fair offer, though?

I hate to spend too much on the inconsistent Ollie, but the cost of decent pitching these days dictates they make a solid offer to keep one of their own who won’t cost draft picks.
At 27, a 4-year deal for Ollie is reasonable. Let’s say 4 years/$46M. I doubt anyone out there blows that offer out of the water – if they do or if Ollie leaves for $2M more, so be it.
