Delgado coming back

October
31

The Mets made it official today, exercising Carlos Delgado’s $12 million option for next year.

Be honest: Who thought last June that Delgado would be back. His bat seemed dead and he looked older than his 36 years. But then he hit .308 with 27 homers and 80 RBI in 84 games from June 27 on. That left him with a final average of .271 with 38 homers and 115 RBI.

“Carlos is a key part of our plans for 2009, and we wanted to let him know as quickly as allowed that we wanted him back,” GM Omar Minaya said in a statement. “Yesterday — the day following the conclusion of the World Series — was the first day that we could pick up the option per the contract. It was our full intent to promptly close our deal with Carlos, and that’s what we did.”

So what do you think? Are you glad to have Delgado back? Does he have another big season in him?

At the least, I think it is realistic to expect a 30/100 season from Carlos, which would be fine by me. In addition, that right field porch in citi field may be very inviting for a left handed power hitter like Carlos.

In addition, the only alternatives that you can count on to reliably replace Carlos in the lineup are Mark Teixeira, and Adam Dunn. In a winter in which Omar’s primary focus should be on pitching, Mark’s tag may prove to be too prohibitive, plus negotiations would drag on and on, as they always do with Boras clients.

As far as Adam Dunn, he is a true 3 outcome player, who says he is very comfortable at 1st base. Though the two ballparks he has called home are hitter friendly, his homers are never cheap, which is good as Citi looks to be more pitcher friendly. I would be ok with him slotting in the lineup, but at the same time the low average scares me. He does walk a lot, which is a great asset, but I think the benefit of a basehit outweighs that of the walk, as a single will also advance runners when there is no force. Sure he drives in 100 runs in an average year, but considering he hits 40 HR’s a year, that total is a bit low, in my opinion.

That being said, if Omar were to move Delgado for high-end bullpen help, and bring in Dunn, I would be ok with it. Other than that very specific scenario, (or one involving Delgado being moved, and Manny being signed to a short term deal) I think Delgado is the best bet for the Mets at cleanup.

They should hire you Ravi for this rag’s blog. You have expressed more of your own opinion’s in one post than Brian and Josh and all the others have since the rag fired Delcos to save on benfits and salary.

    Diminishing returns, boys.

Another year older and deeper in debt as the old song said.

“Acceptable” production at best, if he even stays healthy enough to have been considered to produce at all.

Should’a made that run at Texarkana and let Delgado limp to 500 home runs as a DH so that he could be the first non-HOFer with 500 home runs.
