The Post has the Mets ready to chase Derek Lowe for the rotation and Brian Fuentes to close. Lowe is 35, but there will be stiff competition coming off a 14-win season with the Dodgers. Fuentes is 33, and here are the lefty’s save numbers the last four years with the Rockies: 31 in 34 chances (2005); 30 in 36 chances (2006), 20 in 27 chances (2007) and 30 in 34 chances (2008). So how about it? Are these the chips you want to add to the staff?

Fuentes has a nice sv%, but the bottom line is that he has lost the closers job twice in Colorado. Considering his likely price tag, a few million more gets you K-Rod….
I’m fine with Lowe, on a perhaps 3 yr deal. He would make a nice number 2 in the rotation behind Johan. I feel that the Mets need another lefty in the rotation though, considering the strong LHB’s in the division, particularly Utley/Howard.
Can’t you find your own story intern??? If we want to know what other sites are saying we’llgo to Metsblog. Do they work you guys part time so they don’t have to pay you any benefits?
Pass. Enough with big dollar multi year contracts for aging guys tat, if not well past their prime, certainly aren’t going to approach it!
Lowe is decent, but nothing special, and has a high probability of decline (age 35? only Roider got better after that!).
For 1 year, fine. Not for 3.
Fuentes the same. He had respectable numbers, but is already 33. How about finding a young guy with a strong arm to get the job? Last thing we need is another mid-30s guy getting by on guile.
I would love to see the rotation end up being all in their 20s, with Johan the senior citizen. Might not happen, so 1 cagy vet that itches a lot of innings is fine, just not a LT deal.
ANd Lowe better not be counted on to be #2 in the rotation. Je would logically be slotting into the 4 hole, with a rookie type at #5.
And yes, a 2nd Lefty would be nice in the rotation, as long as the Phils keep trotting out Howard and Utley!
@Ravi: Rodriguez will likely cost $6 million more than Fuentes, not “a few million”.
@Metsfan: Don’t you have anything better to do than to malign someone for attempting to encourage discourse? (Answer: Clearly not).
@stick: If we all chip in would you consider hiring an editor to proofread your comments before allowing you to hit ‘submit’?
Dear swift boat: I am encouraging discourse. There is none on this site due to the shabby treatment by this rag newspaper firing the Mets beat writier and replacing him with interns, The lack of discourse is fully exemplified by your absolutely pathetic write up. When this rag decides that the Mets deserve full time beat writers just as much as the Yankees do, then the criticism will cease. But of course you are too ignorant to understand what has transpired on this site.
Metsfan has a problem. He harassed the last writer of this blog until he got banned. Now he cant go over to his new site like the rest of us, so he stays here and rags on the new guys.
Minaya needs to go hard after free agent C Ramon Hernandez to get the catching straightened out then go from there with bullpen and OF help.
What’s the new site Ray Sadecki? I’m not afraid to go there. What is it dude? Does it have more posts than this place has?
