The Mets’ season was saved yesterday afternoon in the latest and greatest performance by ace Johan Santana, who threw a three-hit shutout on three-days rest to beat the Marlins.
As Brian Heyman tells us, Santana-as-savior gave Shea one more meaningful game; the Brewers lost to the Cubs and are yet again tied with the Mets for first in the NL Wild Card race.
The Amazin’s turn to the unpredictable Oliver Perez today on three-days rest. Brian tells us in this notebook that Perez’s teammates believe the good Ollie has the goods to beat the Marlins and pitch them to another day. The notebook also has thoughts on the remarkable recent contributions of Ramon Martinez.
The Mets’ farewell to Shea will be held after today’s game. If you’re from our coverage area (Westchester, Rockland or Putnam Counties), send me an e-mail and let me know (jthomson@lohud.com). We may be in search of fans following the festivities.
