The Mets cleared the clubhouse of reporters this afternoon, so Jerry Manuel could have a team meeting. The manager wanted to get the players pointed back in the right direction after losing three of four to bad teams, including the 7-2 defeat to the Nationals last night in the series opener. The Mets have just a half-game lead going into tonight’s game.
Also, Omar Minaya said the plan for John Maine next season is for him to start, not to close. Maine had suggested he’d be willing to give it a try. Both Minaya and Manuel downplayed Maine’s attempt to come back in relief before the end of the regular season. While no one ruled it out, Minaya said the team would continue to be cautious because of the bone spur in his right shoulder.
