Hello from Washington, I took the train down and have arrived here at Nationals Park, nice view of the Capitol building in the distance and the Mets taking BP below. Before we get to the lineups, here’s some pregame chatter to chew on:
What are the Mets going to do for a closer next season? Well, John Maine prefers to start, but he said today that if the Mets ask, he would give closing a try during spring training. Actually, he threw today for the first time since going on the DL, 35 throws, just a catch, said he felt good, said he would like to be back in the pen during the final homestand since it’s too late to stretch out his arm to start. He’s willing to try the ninth before next season. But it remains to be seen how he feels when he airs his arm out off a mound. After all, he does need surgery for the bone spur in his shoulder. Would you like to see him as the closer next season?
In the wake of yesterday’s disaster in the ninth with Luis Ayala, Jerry Manuel indicated he’s on a short leash in future ninth innings, and may not even start the inning if the matchups dictate a lefty reliever. … Brandon Knight will start Wednesday’s game. … Manuel wasn’t sure if Damion Easley could pinch hit tonight, but he’s down for the short term because of the strained quad. Luis Castillo is starting despite that .176 average since he came off the DL on Aug. 24.
OK, the lineups for the two teams:
