UPDATE, 8:46 p.m.: OK, here’s the update on why Jerry Manuel opted for Scott Schoeneweis over Pedro Feliciano in Game 1. Manuel met with the media between games and said he felt Schoeneweis gave the Mets a better chance at inducing a ground ball for a double play.
As for Johan Santana, he quickly met with reporters and said he felt strong but didn’t have his best stuff. “My fastball was all over the place,” he said.
Both Manuel and Santana dismissed the idea that the Mets were worried about last year’s collapse. Obviously, they look prescient now with Jon Niese pitching like a new man.
UPDATE, 9:08 p.m.: Chipper Jones is out of the lineup again with a stiff back. He told reporters today he hopes to return to the lineup tomorrow to play one last game at “one of his favorite ballparks.” Gee, I wonder why?
Honestly though, I heard this brought up on the radio, but do you think Met fans should applaud Chipper for all their battles with him at Shea over the years? Or, more likely, should he be booed unmercifully?

Did Alex get fired?
I don’t boo, but I wouldn’t cheer Chipper. He’s not retiring from the game. The day he is going to play his last game against the Mets, I’ll give him a standing O.
Yeah, no cheering for Chipper just yet. I also wouldn’t boo him, but the man has caused me a tremendous amount of grief, so I’m not gonna cheer. Not – gonna – do it.
