The team just released a statement saying he wasn’t here with the team. … Billy Wagner (elbow) will have surgery tomorrow. … Ramon Castro said he felt good after running, but there isn’t yet a timetable for his return. Castro is not yet 100 percent. … Johan Santana will start Friday and Pedro Martinez will start Saturday. They both pitched in Sunday’s doubleheader. … Manuel said he likes the defense and experience of Fernando Tatis over Nick Evans.
— Here’s Jerry Manuel on John Maine: “I don’t anticipate having him back.” The only possible role for Maine, Manuel said, would be out of the bullpen in the final week of the year or the postseason. Maine wouldn’t be able to build up enough arm strength to start again this season.
