Minor-leaguer Ambiorix Burgos, the right-handed reliever acquired last year from the Royals for Brian Bannister, was arrested last night at the Holiday Inn near Shea Stadium for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend. It’s an ugly story to say the least.
Burgos had been rehabbing at Port St. Lucie. He was recovering from a 2007 Tommy John surgery.
Here’s a brief statement issued this afternoon by the Mets regarding the incident:
“We are concerned by the allegations that led to his arrest last night. He was in New York for reasons unrelated to the New York Mets. We will closely monitor the situation.”
