Billy Wagner needs Tommy John surgery. He’s out for this year and most or all of next, which is the final season of his contract. So Luis Ayala gets a lot more pressure dumped on him now to keep filling in well as the closer in this postseason push. But what should the Mets do for next season?
K-Rod is scheduled to be a free agent. Should they shell out big bucks for Mr. Rodriguez? Or should they put the money elsewhere and look inside, maybe stick with Ayala or try to see what Eddie Kunz can do, or maybe give Brian Stokes a shot? I’d vote for K-Rod if the Angels let him walk, but it’s not my money. Omar Minaya just said on a conference call with us that they will look internally or externally. The GM didn’t rule out Wagner pitching next September, but obviously there’s a chance that he’s finished as well. Wagner had talked about retiring at the end of his four-year deal when he will be 38.
