Schmidt takes swing at Mets

OK, I’m back after writing my story for Saturday’s paper and the Web site. One of the interesting things about this day involved Mike Schmidt taking a shot at the Mets in his bid to fire up the Phillies. He e-mailed a note to Charlie Manuel, a sort of pep talk for the team, and it was posted on the clubhouse door. Here was the one part that turned some heads, at least among the media:
“The Mets know you’re better than they are. They remember last year.”
Actually, the Mets do remember last year. But after this latest loss, David Wright insisted this is a more resilient team than last year, bouncing back better from the bad defeats. They’ve had some practice at it.
Brett Myers was just better than them in this game, overpowering with four pitches. We may have to wait to see if the Mets bounce back because of the Hanna storm threat. Maybe there will be a day/nighter Sunday, which might not be optimum for the Mets having already dropped this first one. The players were told to call before they drive in just in case it’s postponed early. We’ll see. The tarp is on the field now at midnight. That’s it for now.

Mike Schmidt is the baby boomer’s version of Bob Feller: a great player who is a cantankerous old man. Nothing wrong with that, I kind of like gruff grumpy old fogies. But bulletin board material means nothing. The Mets have responded well to losing series opening games to the Phillies, going 8-0 after. Our pitching is better than theirs as long as Billy Wagner stays away.
