— Jerry Manuel on moving Luis Castillo down to the No. 7-hole. “I kinda want to bunch those six hitters together right now,” Manuel said of his big four, Murphy and Church. … I’ve told you guys this for the last week — Manuel really loves Dan Murphy. Today, when discussing Murphy’s understanding of hitting, Manuel went so far as to compare him to the great Roberto Alomar. Manuel said Alomar used to use at-bats early in games to setup pitchers. He believes Murphy may be good enough one day to do that. … High praise, indeed.

— Luis Ayala, who appeared to favor his groin during the 10th last night, is available today. Manuel is not overly concerned about Ayala’s injury because his velocity has remained consistent.

— Sounds like Manuel would prefer to give Brian Stokes the game off.

— Manuel won’t say how long he plans to ride four starters. He hasn’t thought about pitchers past the upcoming series with Philly.

— Pedro is still planned to start Saturday. Manuel hasn’t thought about sending Johan Santana out Saturday instead, even though he would be on full rest. … I’m just speculating as to why, but Cole Hamels, who threw a shutout last night, will likely pitch Sunday. Hamels, who has dealt with several injuries already in his career, seems a little resistant to it, but Charlie Manuel is considering reshuffling the rotation.

“I want to put Hamels on the Mets,” Charlie Manuel told MLB.com. “That’s a two-game swing, and this time of the year, we need to win some of those games in New York. We’ll talk to him and see how he feels. We’ll talk to the trainer and see where we’re at.”
