My logic is that the team wanting to give Pelfrey a start off before Maine got hurt, so this will be almost as good. Also, Niese gets a soft landing with two starts against the Nationals. If Santana is starting the penultimate game, he likely won’t be available to start the first game in the playoffs, if we should be so lucky. If he is needed at the end of the regular season, Pelfrey can start any potential one-game playoff or the first game of the NLDS.

By the way, I would have liked to see Reyes here. Schoenweis clearly in a mop up role. I posted this before regarding the pen and post season (cross your fingers,) please let me know what you guys think:

Stokes also has done a great job. If he keeps this up and the Mets make the postseason, he’ll definitely be on the roster. Funny, if the Mets do make it, Omar and Manuel will have some pretty interesting choices to make. Let’s say Maine doesn’t come back, but Wagner does. The rotation is Santana, Pedro, Perez, Pelfrey, who will the relievers be? Will they carry 12 pitchers? Wagner/Stokes/Ayala/Heilman/Feliciano/Smith/Sanchez/Schoenweis. Let’s say Maine and Wagner do make it back, who doesn’t make this playoff roster? What happens if Al Reyes is lights out? Do the Mets dare go w/o Heilman or Sanchez and Schoenweis? Very interesting stuff. Of course, Mets have to make the post season first!

Add to that Ollie getting an extra start. So by skipping niese you extra starts for pelfrey and ollie.

Spider: I understand the logic in wanting to have santana on the mound the final game. But by if my quick calculations are correct skipping niese until the 16th when a #5 is needed you would have Johan picting the next to last game and an extra start for Pelfrey who has been amazing.

So, as this game looks to be in hand, a couple days ago I came up with a starting pitching schedule for the rest of the season that will leave Santana avaialble for the last game of the regular season if he is needed, or first game of the potential playoffs if not. It also rests Pelfrey a bit and gets our healthy four to pitch the whole series against the Cubs. Of course, Niese’s spot can be filled by somebody else if he is ineffective, or John Maine.

Sep 5-7 vs. Phillies: Pelfrey, Martinez, Santana
Sep 8: Off day
Sep 9-10 vs. Nationals: Perez, Niese
Sep 11: Off day
Sep 12-14 vs. Braves: Martinez, Santana, Pelfrey
Sep 15-18 at Nationals: Perez, Niese, Martinez, Santana
Sep 19-21 at Braves: Pelfrey, Perez, Niese
Sep 22-25 vs. Cubs: Martinez, Santana, Pelfrey, Perez
Sep 26-28 vs. Marlins: Niese, Martinez, Santana

Now let’s just see if the coaching staff can come up with a smart schedule, as well.

I agree that one hit may not be what champions are made of but sweeping one of the hottest and better teams in the league is.

As for the call ups i agree that at 6-1 i would not work in call ups. At 8-2 I might.

As far as working the other guys in, no is the answer. A 5 run lead (at the time you wrote that,) is not safe, especially with the offense the Brewers have. Again, it sure would be nice if the Mets tacked on runs!!!

I just hate it when this team doesn’t tack on runs. It just leaves it so open for a comeback by the other team. I’m not comfortable at all.

And then of course he strikeouts back to back guys after that. But that just illustrates why he just needs to attack guys.

As for Scoops comments the scary thing about possibly going 6-2 on this trip is that you can argue the mets gave away the 2 games they did lose.

This is the kind of stuff thats just inexcusable. 6-0 and you’re walking back to back hitters. I know thats just how it goes with Perez sometimes but you’re just setting yourself up for the 3 run jack to put the brewers back in the game.
