Pregame, Mets vs. Brewers, Game 1

September
1

Everyone is here today except for Al Reyes. He will be here tomorrow.

I haven’t talked to Jon Niese yet, but I did just speak to Bobby Parnell. He said they knew they were coming up on Friday and they’ve been in Milwaukee since Saturday. I asked him what they have been up to. “Nothing,” Parnell said. “Just enjoying the big league hotel.”

Update (11:20 a.m.): Looks like Parnell is as close as we are getting to Niese today. He’s not going to speak until after the start tomorrow.

Just from observing, he does seem like a guy who needs a day to get used to things. He is very quiet and seems a little unsure of what to do. I think this must be a little overwhelming for a 21-year-old.

Here are the lineups…

METS (76-61, 1st NL East):
7 Reyes, SS
28 Murphy, LF
5 Wright, 3B
21 Delgado, 1B
15 Beltran, CF
19 Church, RF
3 Easley, 2B
23 Schneider, C
57 Santana, P

BREWERS (75-55, 2nd NL Central):
23 Weeks, 2B
7 Hardy, SS
8 Braun, LF
28 Fielder,1B
1 Hart, RF
25 Cameron, CF
2 Hall, 3B
18 Kendall, C
15 Sheets, P

Notes: Luis Castillo is the odd-man out. Jerry Manuel said the grass in Miami is hard and he saw Castillo wince some on Saturday. “Its important that we keep him fresh.” Obviously, Easley has something to do with it. Manuel likes his power at 2B. … Luis Ayala (groin) is available today. … Manuel isn’t sure who will close, but it will be a righty, unless Prince Fielder comes up in a big spot. … Expect Ricardo Rincon to be a factor. Rincon almost made the team as a third lefty in spring training. Manuel said the club had trade talks in the works that would have allowed the Mets to keep Rincon, but nothing came to fruition.

(UPDATE, 12:10 p.m.) More notes: We just spoke to assistant GM John Ricco. He said Al Reyes was going to stay with the B-Mets today because they have another game left. … Argenis Reyes is eligible today. He didn’t have to wait the 10 mandatory days because New Orleans’ season is over. … We should have word today on Billy Wagner, but it hasn’t come in yet. … Pedro Martinez went back to New York — but it doesn’t appear to be a cause for concern. With the extra bodies in the clubhouse, the team felt more comfortable sending Pedro to New York to work with trainer Chris Correnti, who trained Pedro dating back to his days in Boston. Ricco was asked specifically about Pedro’s diminished velocity or, in general, if there is an injury concern. He said there wasn’t. … Another addition to the roster today is Brandon Knight, fresh off the Beijing Olympics. I’m not sure how the Mets plan to find innings for Knight, Nelson Figueroa, Carlos Muniz, Al Reyes and Parnell. Plus, you figure any mop-up innings will fall to Parnell, so… … Manuel said he’d try to find a low-stress spot for Parnell, similar to what they did with Eddie Kunz. … By the way, it sounds like the Mets saw all they needed to see from Kunz.

— How’d the Mets make these moves you ask? Well, they moved El Duque, Trot Nixon and Jason Vargas to the 60-day DL, and designated Willie Collazo for assignment. Ruddy Lugo will be designated tomorrow to make room for Al Reyes.

Josh. DUde you are doing a GREAT JOB! You are throwing a lot of red meat to the hungry. Keep the details and the insights coming. Comments like the ones about Niese’s uncertainty or why Castillo is sitting or Pedro’s whereabouts are fantastic. Keep it up!

Agreed. This is the kind of information I can expect to find here, I’ll be supporting this site for a long time.
