Quick recap: Mets 6, Marlins 2

August
31

I have an 8:55 plane to catch to Chicago, then a midnight drive to Milwaukee, so I’ll keep this short:

— The Mets aren’t spooked with the calendar turning to September tomorrow:

“We cannot worry about last year,” Jose Reyes said. “This is a new year for us and right now we’re playing good baseball.”

— Jerry Manuel was happy to finish a brutal August that included just two days off, no closer and plenty of adversity. That made winning two of three in Florida satisfying:

“We were gasping for air coming to the day off,” Manuel said. “But we were able to get it done.”

— Pedro Martinez was his typically effusive self after the game. He barely hit anything above 84, but he battled. “Nothing special,” he deemed it…

“I was a little sluggish today,” Martinez said.  “I didn’t feel quite upbeat. But I was able to use my experience to make some pitches and we ended up winning the game.”

— The Mets know after blowing a seven-game lead with 17 to play in ‘07 that they cannot take September for granted:

“I don’t feel like I’m out of the waters yet,” Pedro Martinez said. “Until I see that last day that we won that division, I’m not going to be relaxed.”

— I talked briefly with both Scott Schoeneweis (back) and Luis Ayala (groin) after the game. Schoeneweis was asked if he felt good enough to pitch. He frowned and said, “Good enough.” (Manuel checked on Schoeneweis after he recorded an out in the seventh but he was fine.) … Ayala warmed up in the ‘pen and said he was sore but improving. “I feel fine,” he said. Ayala said he’d be ready tomorrow.

I was looking for Mets to take 2 of 3 and Phils to lose 3 of 4 to cubbies. Zambranos injury ended that, but we are still in first place going into September. Werth has been amazing for phillies. Also, Phils have a nice rotation now with Myers pitching well and the addition of Blanton. Its going to be tough for the Metsies unless Wagner comes back and pitches effectively. Getting Maine back would help too.

here’s to hoping the September call ups can pitch us to a division title because the usual cast of clowns will not get it done. If we can stay within one game going into the 12 game stretch we will be in good shape, but that’ll be tough to do.
