It was stressful — and nearly a haunting loss — but the Mets held on to beat the Marlins 5-4. Carlos Beltran had perhaps the biggest swing of the season, a two-out grand slam that spurred a rousing victory…even if Luis Ayala did his best to throw it away.
As for the notebook, we try to answer the question: Will Jon Niese start Tuesday? The Mets aren’t saying, but he’s not the choice of one key member of the organization, who notes that the Brewers (MLB-best .469 slugging) absolutely tee-off on LHP. I also had Jerry Manuel’s thoughts on Barack Obama, the debut of instant replay, tomorrow’s starter, and more.
After yesterday’s internet issues, I’ll have the pitching matchups for today and tomorrow in a bit.

I doubt Niese pitches Tuesday and by doubt, I think I mean, no chance. He pitched 2+ innings yesterday throwing about 69 pitches to get through them.
It will probably be Nelly Figs
Gotta say—it’s way too harsh to say that Ayala “did his best to throw it away.” The guy has marginal stuff to begin with, he was hurting, he didn’t walk or hit anybody, and he got three outs. With any luck, Ramirez’s grounder would have ended the game with no runs scoring. After that, Ayala was simply gassed, and he was lucky Cantu didn’t hit it out, but he gutted it out. I don’t call that trying to throw the game away. Kevin Gregg—now that’s a different story.
