Aftermath: Mets 6, Phillies 3

Another big night for Carlos Delgado (3 for 4, 2 HR, 3 RBI) and another big hit for Daniel Murphy, who had an RBI double off Brad Lidge to score Carlos Beltran with the winning run.
Did I say the Mets should’ve pinch-hit for Murphy in the sixth? Yes. Boy did he prove me wrong.
I wish I could give you quotes from Murphy about the biggest hit of his career, but he’s very quiet and talks almost solely about X’s and O’s. Instead, here’s what Jerry Manuel had to said about the rookie, who snapped an 0-for-16 skid:
“I still feel very confident with him at the plate,” Manuel said. “I never thought about pinch-hitting for him or anything like that. He’s a big part of what we’re doing.”
To me, the story tonight was Delgado, who’s continued resurgence is so out-of-this-world that someone actually asked him about entering the NL MVP mix. Huh, Carlos Delgado???
Delgado, a free-agent with a 2009 option that can either vest or become a club option, said he’d like to remain in New York next year. At this rate I can’t imagine anyone would want him to leave, even the same people who wanted him traded, benched and/or released back in June.
“I’d like to come back,” he said in the middle of a clubhouse so raucous it sounded like a South Beach nightclub. “This is something we’ll probably revisit in the off season. Right now we’re trying to win. It’s exciting.”
Time for me to hit the road. I have a long drive home to Westchester and a flight to catch to Florida tomorrow. I’ll have more to say then. Happy blogging Met fans…

GREAT WIN BUT JD MUST I HAVE TO HEAR YOU WHINE ABOUT YOU FLIGHT AND DRIVING I DUN GIVA CRAPAZ!!!!!!!!!
Option on Delgado… baaaad idea.
Bad bad bad.
Every time you roll the dice on age, the odds increase on rolling craps like the Yankees have this year.
Nice June-on, sure, but another year of age on that frame and April-May becomes April-May-June-July.
Let him go DH somewhere as he really should’ve been doing for years.
I’d give him one more year. Tex is a pipe dream IMO and it allows Omar to focus on reeling in the pitching, figuring out LF, fixing the bullpen etc.
Mike C, what are your other choices?
Texiera-given Yanks not making playoffs and something like 80MM coming off books, it would seem that Mets have only slim chance for him
other FAs-it looks like a pretty sad lot after Texiera
Some rookies-Carp, Evans, Murphy-maybe you could take the chance but w/only 2 know middle of the order bats (Beltran, Wright and maybe Church), you risk having offense really droping off
Trade-what can Mets possibly trade for a middle of the order bat? I don’t see much that would land them a big time RBI guy. And even if they did trade someone or several guys, it is not as if they have much in the minors to replace those parts.
It would seem that the best choice from a cost ($$ and not trading away other parts that cause other holes), although it does come w/the age risk, is Delgado.
Plus, Delgado would be playing for another contract next yr. He might surprise.
And if Church can be the player he was in April/May or something close to it, a Delgado of diminished skills still could be ok.
