Here are a few facts and figures:
— WHO SAID THESE ARE DOG DAYS?: Johan Santana (12-7, 2.64) vs. Kyle Kendrick (11-7, 4.87) tonight. Santana will make his last start in the month of August, but check this out: He is 26-3 with a 2.03 ERA in his last 37 August starts. Wow. … Santana is 5-0 with a 2.02 ERA in his last nine starts. … He is 1-0 with a 2.60 ERA in four career starts vs. the Phils. His last two outings against them this season were no-decisions (you may remember) despite allowing four earned runs in 16.0 IP.
— FLASHING THE LEATHER: The Mets’ defense has been impressive. They have not made an error in 30 of 34 games, and have just four errors during that stretch. It is the fewest errors over any 34-game stretch in team history. Now if they could just do something about that bullpen…
— RENAISSANCE MAN: Carlos Delgado has been red hot. He leads the NL with 17 HR and 55 RBI since June 27th.
— GETTIN’ STARTED: Mets starters are 9-1 with a 2.97 ERA in their last 13 games.
— THE METS AREN’T AS BAD AS IT SEEMS THIS AFTERNOON: It may be hard to remember now, but the Mets have won 11 of 15 and 14 of 20. In fact, they are 31-16 in their last 47. Not bad.
— JOSE REYES IS FAST: Reyes has 60 triples the last four years. The only other player with 60 or more was the Hit Dog, Lance Johnson, who had 61 from 1993-1996.

Reyes actually does not have 3 consecutive 15-triple seasons as he only had 12 last year.
17, 17, 12, 16…
I have to agree with Ravi from the last post, the bullpen should not have been blamed last night, in fact they were all in all pretty decent last night considering the momentum and the BS Ballpark that they play in over there. Pedro was clearly losing it and getting him the win was more important that shutting down the Phils in the 5th (I had Willie flashbacks). The offense just goes into coast mode after the first couple of innings. Has anyone addressed why this happens? The only thing I can think of is that the scouting and management get the team ready for the starting pitcher but do not go far enough to prepare us for the bullpens. Does anyone know what the bullpen ERA against us is this year? I would love to see that stat!
One last thought…. I love the SNY announcing team but they kept raving about that game last night like it was a classic. I couldnt agree any less! Maybe I am a bit biased but a) the stadium is an absolute joke, B)the starting pitching was awful c) the umpiring was about as bad as it has been all year between the Carlos Notran a$$ ball and the inconsistent home plate umpiring d) and most importantly it was the slowest most painful 4 hours of 9 inning baseball i have ever seen not to mention the 4 terrible innings afterwards. IMO classic games are easy and fun for the casual fan to watch, and let me assure you, that game was only fun for people who watch that other league, what do they call that, the American League? What a joke…..
Justin, I pulled that from the game notes, but I trust you. I will check it when I return to the press box.
Josh – I just wanted to tell you you are doing a great job so far with the blog – I really like all the detailed updates and style you provide. Keep up the good work!!!
BP ERA last nite just over 3. Pedro ERA=9.
I’d say BP was better.
I have a feeling that the accumulation of pitches the last 2 starts on Johan is gonna catch up to him tonite. He may not give up many runs but it is hard to see him going deep.
Mets better score 10+ b/c I can see BP having to get 8-9 outs.
