It’s always fun before a big series to see how the other town views it. I remember when I was dispatched to Boston in 2005 to write about a compelling MVP race between Alex Rodriguez and David Ortiz. Surprisingly, Ortiz became convinced the media had tabbed A-Rod as the MVP, citing the fact he was a DH. People here had a completely different perception of the race, although Big Papi was right. A-Rod eventually won a close vote.
(UPDATE, 3:40 p.m.) In that same vein, I wanted to link to a column from Philly.com, but it’s ruining the post and has been all day. Anyway, go to Philly.com sports and read the column by Bob Ford.
Charlie Manuel says the Mets thought they were the better team last year. It also portrays the Mets as a staggered team, which isn’t exactly the perception here.
Also — and you won’t believe this — I listed to WIP, Philly’s sports radio station, and heard the following:
— The Mets stink and Philly fans can’t believe the Phils are even in a fight with them.
— A listener, bemoaning the turnaround by Mike Pelfrey, said he hoped Pelfrey gets into a car accident.
Nice, nice touch from the lovely citizens of the city of brotherly love.
Now if that doesn’t get you fired up I don’t know what will.
