The starters are cruising

August
22

Hard to believe, after what they’ve been doing lately, that the Mets starters are second in ERA to the Cubs. That could well change before the season is out. Santana, Pelfrey, Olly, Maine—these guys have been super. Seems like its one good start after another, and whether the Mets score or not doesn’t matter.

After his three-hit shutout last start Santana followed it up with seven shutout innings tonight. It’s become almost routine. Look carefully Met fans—this is the guy you paid all that cash for. Well, not you specifically, but you know what I mean. He’s back to being the best pitcher in baseball. And maybe the best in the history of August. Get this—he’s now 26-3 in August since 2002. Not bad.

Brian Schneider supported him with a two-run homer in the second. The Big Schneid’s got three in his last five starts. Heilman and Luis Ayala closed with two perfect innings.

Philly also won today so the Mets are still 2.5 back.
