Injury updates —

Ryan Church is moving to Binghamton. New Orleans is on the road. He will join Luis Castillo there. This is Castillo’s last game of rehab. After tonight the Mets must either activate him or have him play simulated games in Florida. Omar Minaya said it depended on how Castillo feels, although the GM did not Castillo had two hits yesterday after struggling mightily.

The Church-Castillo contingent will be joined tomorrow in Binghamton by Al Reyes, who was released by Tampa on Aug. 9. Reyes will likely join the Mets on September 1st, according to Minaya. Of course, he will be an option in the ‘pen eventually as the Mets hope quantity will solve their problems. The quality just hasn’t been there. For what it’s worth, Reyes had 26 saves in 30 chances last year for the Rays.

I will have more in a bit on Mike Pelfrey and a possible innings limit to watch out for. Also I will have Jerry manuel’s thoughts on the outfield rotation if/when Church comes back. The club sounds optimistic.

If you can’t have your elite closer, adding more options is usually the best thing to do. Go with a guy if he gets hot, and switch to someone else when he starts to lose it. Of course, that doesn’t work as well in the playoffs, but what can you do?

  2. Steve (The Original)

But if Reyes gets hot after 9/1, then he won’t be eligible for the post season unless they come up with some sort of injury for someone else in the pen. I wish there would be a way to add him by 8/31.

  3. JohnM

Why can’t they add him before 9/1?

  4. David

Well its always good to add warm bodies. I’m all for some new faces that dont cost you any talent.

Josh Thomson looks just like that Delcos fella. They have the same email, too! I call shenanigans!

  6. Tiffany

Do you have any plaid shirts, Josh?

  7. JohnM

Oh, sure, NOW they change it and my last comment looks like crazy talk.

  8. Josh Thomson

Tiffany…One pair of plaid shorts, no plaid shirts.

    JohnM:

They can add him before 8/31 if they put him on the 25-man roster and drop someone else off of it, like any normal move. However, if they simply put him on the 40-man roster now, they he can play with the major league club after 9/1, when 40-man roster play begins.
