Mets Chat Room: Pedro Edition.

August
16

We have Pedro Martinez going tonight. The Mets have lost his last three starts. Martinez has gotten gradually better, but to say he’s all the way back would be premature.

By now you know Billy Wagner won’t be ready by Monday, so the Mets will continue with their patchwork situation at closer. Aaron Heilman got it done last night, so I would assume it would be him again tonight.

If Wagner’s status is iffy, then Jerry needs to break Kunz in. The other guys are hit-or-miss, short-term band-aids that aren’t viable options for the remaining six weeks. If there’s any chance Wagner isn’t coming back, Jerry has got to transition Kunz into the role. Outside of using one of his starters to close, it’s his only viable option.

  2. Stillsane

I agree with Tiffany. The only thing worse they could do with Kunz than not using him is to keep waiting for the right situation to put him in. He has been working as a closer at various levels. Let’s see if he can step it up and work on the major league level.

  3. John Delcos

No doubt about it. If you don’t trust him in a game, then he shouldn’t be here. If you’re trying to protect him, you’re only hurting him because the message he’s getting is you have no faith in him. Pitch him, dammit!-JD

  4. Annie Savoy

Was Wagner with the group that visited Walter Reed last week?

  5. David

I agree with Tiffany but personally i think they should break him into with joe smith type situations 7th inning couple righites coming up…..

JD here we go again 2 runs in here in the first and 4 straight balls hit well…

    THIS CAME OVER THE WIRE:

Tom Glavine is out for the season, and his illustrious career could be over if he needs major surgery on his injured left elbow.

The 42-year-old Glavine still hopes to return next year—unless he needs elbow ligament replacement surgery.

A 300-game winner, Glavine said Saturday he will be examined by Dr. James Andrews next week in Alabama. Glavine, who was placed on the disabled list Friday with a torn flexor tendon in his left elbow, plans to have surgery to repair the tendon.

He said he’d give up his comeback hopes for 2009 if Andrews determines the pitcher needs the ligament replacement procedure, known as Tommy John surgery. Rehabilitation after that procedure often takes at least a year.

A two-time NL Cy Young Award winner with Atlanta, Glavine gave up seven runs in four innings against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday in his first start since June 10. He is 2-4 with a 5.54 ERA in 13 games this season, and 305-203 in his career.

Glavine re-signed with the Braves this season after five years with the Mets. He pitched for Atlanta from 1987-2002 and won 20 games or more five times.-JD

  7. David

Good job by tatis with the two out RBI….

  8. Annie Savoy

Give him a call, John – maybe you can work with him on his book. I doubt he will be pitching again.

  9. David

Wow just for a laugh here. Watching this game via the Pirates telecast and the play by play guy ask the color man if he thinks Pedro has a shot at the hall. Color man says he’ll definitely get consideration….

Ummmmm to me Pedro is as close to a sure thing as you got going..What do you all think?

  10. Annie Savoy

    First Ballot.

  11. John Delcos

He gets my vote. So does Glavine.-JD

  12. David

Glavine is definitely a hall of famer as well JD

  13. Craig

I like Heilman but right now have no confidence in him. Every time he comes in I expect him to give up a homerun. I would be more comfortable giving him another try as a starter before we trade him

  14. David

And Pedro further solidifies his HOF resume…

  15. John Delcos

Am I worrying too much when I say I wish Pedro had been held at third and not forced to make that last run to the plate?-JD

  16. Annie Savoy

Pedro? He runs, he hits, he throws. I say First Ballot.

  17. agee

craig- heilman giving up a homerun would be a good thing lol.

i hope pedro didnt tire himself out just now! and oh my god, we have a 4-0 lead against the pirates…uh oh

  18. Annie Savoy

John – Glad to see your comments about Pedro and Tom because you really do have a vote.

  19. David

Im nitpicking i know but Evans gotta have a better AB there. Practically anything gets Reyes in from 3rd with less than 2 outs.

As for Pedro being sent the bigger question is how much longer to Jose catches him…

  20. agee

JD- i feel the same way about making pedro run like that

  21. Craig

You all might not agree but as far as Church and Castillo coming back…...No rush maybe we can trade 1 or both or them for some relief pitching. I like Tatis and Murphy with Chavez for defense.

  22. Ray Sadecki

Whew. Glad Glavine didnt want to come back to the Mets. He has plenty of time to golf now.

  23. Craig

As well as Easley and A Reyes in the infield.

  24. Annie Savoy

Ray – Remember the 300 watch of last summer for Glavine? I think that was an indication. And his record this year is poor. I’m hoping Tommy takes the high road and retires now.

  25. David

    Craig,

I definitely have to agree with Church. He’s been out for so long I know it easy to forget just how good he was for the mets this season. Honestly I cant imagine where this team would have been without him early on.

  26. David

Obviously I mean disagree there sorry.

  27. Ray Sadecki

Annie, who would offer him a contract? He only wants to play in atlanta anyway. They are going to want to get younger, so I think hes through. As for Church? that guy was our best all around player before he got hurt. He Plays the game hard and smart. I cant wait to get him back.

  28. Tiffany

I hope the Braves bring Glavine back in 2009.

  29. Craig

OK we need relief help….....who should we trade to get it?

  30. David

    Craig,

For the level of guy you’re going to get at this point off waivers I’d give up a bag of balls and a copy of JD’s column for the next 2 months. And the column might be pushing it.

  31. Ray Sadecki

Craig, Maybe they should give Kunz a chance first.

  32. Annie Savoy

Ray – re: Church – I’ve read that there are some players who had a similar injury and never played again. I really hope the Mets are being very, very careful with him for various reasons.

  33. agee

craig- i’d get rid of castillo and easley, we should keep the young(ish) talent like argenis reyes, ryan church, endy chavez. i mean for christ’s sake easley was alive when the mets won their first world series.

  34. David

Pedro showing cat like reflexes off the mound.

  35. Craig

Here is the question. Will playing Church cause anymore damage? If he plays and then it is determined that he can’t it could just be that it wasn’t bringing him back that made his condition worse….....In other words if they determine that if he comes back no further damage can happen and then its determined that he cant play it doesn’t necessarily mean that because he played he was set back or any further damage took place. With that said I think they are being careful this time.

  36. Craig

    Agee,

I agree if we can get anything decent for Castillo and Easily

  37. Ray Sadecki

Careful is not the word. Babysteps, thats the ticket.

  38. David

    Ray,

With the way they handled it the first time and the heat they took for it I dont think you could expect them to handle it any other way.

  39. Ray Sadecki

David, You are correct, as usual.

  40. David

Pedro is looking good to this point and very efficient to boot 64 pitches through 5.

  41. Ray Sadecki

    JD,

I see the pirates do all kinds of things for thier fans, Including family packs that include hats, food, fireworks and free concerts. I know the Mets arent going to give that away as long as the mets sell lots of tix without it, but what about oldtimers day? what about banner day? these guys dont even want to give a stupid bobblehead doll away anymore. I am especilly burned about oldtimers day. Why let the yankees celebrate their history alone? We have lots of great memories and great teams and players we would like to see again. Please ask Omar when you see him: How about bringing oldtimers day back to the mets in thier new digs, tell him its ok to invite some old Dodgers and maybe he will say yes.

  42. John Delcos

I don’t understand wanting to trade Easley. He’s a valuable role player. He gets exposed when he plays everyday. It’s not fair to be critical of him when he does because he’s expected. And, let’s give up thinking they’ll be able to trade Castillo and that contract. Besides, the Mets already have a bag of balls.-JD

  43. David

3 two out runs tonight, sorry I love that stat. 2 out runs are absolute back breakers especially when you’re 8th hitter hits a bomb with the pitcher on deck and two outs.

  44. David

    JD,

I could of said it better myself.

  45. David

    Couldnt

  46. John Delcos

Nice play by Easley to turn the double play. Tell me again, why do you want to get rid of him.-JD

  47. Craig

JD I think there was a misunderstanding. Easley is great. Great role player and has been clutch. The question was if we had to put an attractive trade package together who can we trade for a quality reliever. Catillo, Church, Easley, Chavez, Heilman? Murphy, A Reyes are the future.

  48. Annie Savoy

Ray – Let’s not go overboard with this Mets Old Timers Day. There are plenty of “Old Mets” without adding the Old Dodgers to that group. Let them celebrate in LA.

  49. John Delcos

Damn, Ray, you’re right. And, banner day. That used to be a Shea staple. Don’t give away trinkets, give away memories. And, here’s another thing. Every game they have somebody pull down the number of remaining games at Shea. Excuse me, but I don’t want the marketing manager of Lincoln pulling down the number. I want Al Weis, or Koosman, or Mookie Wilson, or Kranepool. As far as I’m concerned, they blew that opportunity.-JD

  50. David

    Great play there by Wilson.

    Craig,

The thing is if you’re talking a trade for this season than anyone you trade would have to pass through waivers and other than Castillo I dont see any of those guys passing through waivers. Now if you’re talking the offseason that’s a whole nother ball of wax.

  51. David

We need to be careful here in this inning 6-1 you’re ok dont give up 2-3 more though to make it interesting.

  52. David

    Big huge spot for Pedro.

  53. Craig

    David,

Your right. Thanks for pointing that out.

  54. Ray Sadecki

Annie, I mean old Brooklyn Dodgers, in the old days they brought back a lot of old Brooklyn Dodgers, and Wilpon is creating an new ebbets field. It would only be fitting.

  55. David

Nice to have a gold glove center fielder make everything look so easy. Well pedro got through 7 and the pitch count being at 95 is low enough that you could send him back out there however he did pitch to some pretty hard contact that inning.

  56. Annie Savoy

Is there enough of a lead for Kunz tonight?

  57. Ray Sadecki

Ok John, Now you have a mandate. Put up a vote, better yet. Its time for the brass to remember the fans. My first game, was banner day way back when. Put it to Omar, my friend. Oldtimers day, Its a travesty. We want to see the old heros, by God.

  58. David

Another good inning for Stokes, although im pretty sure its what we will see, I dont see a reason to bring stokes back for a second inning. It is in fact an ideal spot to get Kunz into the game.

  59. Ray Sadecki

Byw, how many are tired of seeing Jeter on mets commercials? come on. raise your windows, scream to the world, Im not gonna take it anymore!!!!!

  60. Ray Sadecki

BTW, of course. I hate it.

  61. John Delcos

ATTENTION: We have an Eddie Kunz sighting. This is no joke. Eddie Kunz is in the game. Now make us proud, dammit.-JD

  62. John Delcos

Too bad you can’t take a knee in baseball.-JD

  63. John Delcos

On the bright side, you have to like the way Kunz automatically knew to back up the plate.-JD

  64. Stillsane

Kunz is in and getting welcomed rudely. He either has to show his stuff here, or, pack for NO. He has to get over his nerves.

  65. matt B in AZ

    this is getting ridiculous now

  66. Ray Sadecki

And now, Give it to Jerry, the kid is just too raw. Bring on Heilman ( OMG did i just say that?)

  67. John Delcos

Look like he’s off to order gumbo. The smart ass in me is saying Kunz is a team player, trying to get a Joe Smith a save.-JD

  68. Stillsane

The jury along with Jerry Manuel is out…..and so is Kunz….he is not ready.

  69. David

Well sometimes we dont know as muhc as we think we do. Please for the love of god bail him out smith. This is way too scary.

  70. matt B in AZ

at least manuel gave him a shot

  71. Craig

Kunz was suppose to wait for Joe Smith to come into the game before he left the mound. Anyway I feel sorry for him and hope he gets another chance.

  72. David

    I have a bad feeling.

  73. David

Well lets hope for Kunz sake that smith can hold on to this.

  74. John Delcos

David: Now you have a bad feeling?-JD

  75. matt B in AZ

the tying run at the plate

  76. Craig

Maybe Manuel changed the policy Smith didn’t wait for his replacement either before leaving the mound

  77. David

This is honestly disgusting. What is Manuel to do. He has a cast of clowns. They might as well pile into a VW bug and come drive in from the pen together.

  78. Annie Savoy

On the anniversary of the day that Elvis left the building permanently, we’ve had a fine night of baseball with Pedro at his current best and a full moon to boot.

Howie’s putting this chapter in “The Book” and we will look forward to the next one tomorrow afternoon with Santana.

PS – No, it wasn’t enough of a lead for Kunz tonight.

  79. David

Ok feliciano doesnt have to pack into the bug. All kidding aside Feliciano has been good of late and got two hitters there with HR power. Anyhow they take the game tomorrow looks like it be a nice pitching match up with Johan vs Karstens who’s been very good since coming over to pit.

  80. Ray Sadecki

This pittsburgh team is so bad, anything less than a sweep will be a dissapointment.

  81. BH

Missed the game today, so all I have is the box score and play-by-play. Having said that, I don’t think it is fair to evaluate Kunz on this outing. Jerry let him sit in the ‘pen for almost a week before bringing him into the game again, that’s bad enough for a seasoned pro, but practically criminal to do to a young kid.

  82. Mike C.

It’s true, Kunz WAS basically iced.

Let’s face it, I mean, Heilman would’ve given up four home runs.

  83. scoopcoop

Kunz: coach class ticket is ready for NO

Pedro: not bad Petey. Just hope Mets don’t get in their heads that they should give him a contract (maybe 1 yr w/option) and not one to OP b/c it will cost alot less

For this “Pedro Edition” from the NY Times/Jack Curry

    Pedro, Big Papi and Fathers
    By Jack Curry

    Tags: David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez

When David Ortiz of the Red Sox batted against the Yankees on July 27, he had a number 45 written on his helmet. Two days earlier, Pedro Martinez’s father, Paulino, had died from brain cancer. By putting Martinez’s number on his helmet, Ortiz paid tribute to his former teammate’s family.
After offering Martinez my condolences last Thursday, I asked him if he had seen Ortiz’s silent tribute. Martinez said he was unaware of what Ortiz had done, but he was not surprised by it. Martinez explained how loyal a friend Ortiz is to him.
Since Ortiz could not leave the Red Sox to attend Paulino’s funeral in the Dominican Republic, he told Pedro that he would send his father. Pedro said that Ortiz’s father did not leave his side while he mourned the loss of his father.
“They call him the Rock,” Pedro said. “He’s as big as Big Papi, but he’s not as tall. He stayed with me the whole time. It meant a lot to me.”
