The Mets enter tonight’s game with a three-game winning streak, with the spark coming from Monday’s meltdown to the Pirates at Shea Stadium.
“We should have won that game,’’ Beltran said. “We let that game get away from us, and if we’re going to be the team we say we are, we can’t keep having games like that.’’
The Mets responded by sweeping Washington, and open a four-game series against the Pirates tonight. Anything less than winning three of four is not acceptable.
“That’s something that’s been a weakness for us all year,’’ Beltran said of the Mets’ struggles against losing teams. “We haven’t played well against teams with that are below .500. It’s something that has to stop.’’
The Mets are 2-7 against Atlanta; 0-3 against Houston; 1-2 against Pittsburgh; 2-5 against San Diego; and 1-2 against Seattle.

Even 4 out of 4 is unacceptable! They need to win 5 out of 4! Get it done Cancel, OR ELSE!
Man you hate to be dsappointed in a 2 run 1st inning but that had the makings of one of those put the game away nice and early innings.
Pelfrey has struggled some on the road so would be real nice to see him have a good start here against a weaker opponent.
David: I was thinking that. I had a hunch about Beltran, which, of course, didn’t happen.-JD
Tough spot here for Pelf. Lets see what he can do would like to see him pitch out of this…
Good job there by Pelf…
david- and he did just that, i’m impressed
when’s pagan coming back? does anyone even remember him?
Matt,
If i remember correctly he had season ending surgery…
Looked safe to me.
Pagan did have season-ending surgery. ... The more I think about it, maybe they should have instant replay for more than just home runs. That was a lousy call on the Reyes steal. Sometimes, the players would be better off on the honor system.-JD
JD,
Question for you how can an umpire a couple feet in front of and to the first base side of second base see wether a hand gets into 2nd base prior to being tagged?
David: That’s a trick question, isn’t it? I don’t know. It was such a bad call. But, he was so emphatic about it, that’s what gets me.-JD
Regretting that first inning more and more by the minute. Hopefully Pelfrey can keep it up…
Nice inning from Pelfrey heads up in getting McClouth (although bad baserunning on his part)
Well defense is helping the big guy out tonight…But now comes the dreaded pitch count 98 pitches with a righty and two lefties (most likeley) coming up next inning i think you’ll see him start the inning with Feliciano warming behind him.
david- i dont know how i missed that one lol (about pagan)
how about church, any season ending problems there?
And like clockwork its now 2-1
Pelfrey threw only 98 pitches. He couldn’t have been cooked. I just don’t trust Sanchez anymore.-JD
That whole “don’t trust Kunz in a tight spot” comment from Jerry real ticked me off, and now with that HR I am starting to get the feeling the that Jerry is acting like the mindless stubborn idiot Willie was when it comes to the ‘pen. Maybe Kunz can’t get it done, but he can’t be worse than this!
You know Ive agreed with most of what manuel has done and as a rule i dont get too critical of the managers. But if you’re going to bring in a lefty to face McClouth why not let Pelfrey go back out there and get the righties…
at least the pirates wont have the top of the order up in the bottom of the ninth…they’ll have the middle but still. why did they take pelfrey out, i’d rather have a pitcher in thats thrown 98 pitches than our bullpen on the mound.
clutch K by feliciano
The only thing i can imagine with Pelfrey is that with him getting up there in IP they are trying to save his arm…
david- save his arm for what? we’re in a pennant race, now’s as good a time to utilize it as any in my opinion
So who will it be in the 9th?
it kills me to say that i think it’ll be heilman
Matt – save his arm for the entire pennant race. A lot of teams get weary of that 100 pitch number with their young pitchers especially when they get to that 150 IP plateau, which Pelf is nearing. Im not saying I agree with it just giving some possible reasoning.
It is time to put the kids to bed. You don’t want them to see dad throw a brick at the TV, do you?-JD
Ugh man awful looking night for tha offense I said it after the 1st and it bears repeating they had a chance to have one of those put the game away innings in the 1st and squandered it. Hopefully the bullpen can actually do their jobs and hold it. Last night the offense picked up the pen by putting up that 4 spot in the 9th and make it an easy game to close, well tonight the pen has got to pick up the offense which apparently left their bats in DC…
If Heilman gets through this inning he and Delgaldo owe Reyes dinner.
Carlos Delgado better buy Argenis Reyes a beer tonight.-JD
JD- were you in my household in the mid 80’s? I was raised by a brick throwing father.
This inning is a microcosm of Heilman’s season and his problems two outs noone on and you’re walking the 7th hitter on 4 pitches…
Just heard the last couple of innings due to Big T-Storms and lightning here in CT.
Anyway, someone did something right as Howie is putting this game in “The Book”.
Pedro tomorrow at 7PM – the bats better come out of hiding for him.
Wheeeeeeeeew!-JD
JD,
You just summed it up. It was ugly the bats were asleep but you gotta win these types…
Now I’m off to watch Michael Phelps do his thing in the pool…
10 over.
No more Heilman or Schoeneweis in pressure situations.
Just… no more.
Think of all the people out there with heart conditions.
Sanchez-can’t throw 2 games in a row. Nothing on his pitches.
Heilman-gets first 2 outs then realizes he is about to close game and thinks too much and walks guy on 4 pitches. Then he shakes off Scheinder twice (again thinking too much AND NO CONFIDENCE TO THROW INSIDE) so he can throw fastballs away. Wilson was looking for it. He got lucky that he missed and threw it inside and jammed him. Wilson may have knocked that pitched down the RF line and maybe tied the game otherwise.
I guess we will have to wait on Sanchez till next year. He seems done. With his injuries the past 2 seaons, you throw him out there and hope you get something from him, then the quick hook.
I hope Heilman is growing up here. We are relying on him because we have no other options. Time for him to step up and show who he is.
One of the nicest things about this recent stretch has been how young players like Wright and Reyes have grown into leaders who make big plays at big moments. It’s almost as if the influx of kids from the minors (Murphy, Evans, Kunz, Argenis) has caused the team’s younger veterans to move up the seniority chart and play more like leaders. It’s time for Heilman to follow suit.
Nah, it’s time for Heilman to go down to the minors and start just like the little baby wuss always wanted, so he can be terrible in a fashion that doesn’t hurt the team.
Million dollar arm, nickel psychology.
I’ve given up on him. He thinks he’s a lot better than he actually is and he just… keeps… messing up trying to prove he’s something he’s not.
When he goes out there resigned to the fact that he’s just an above-average middle reliever and just tries to do that, he basically gets the job done other than his in-built home run tendencies.
When he goes out trying to prove he’s a starter or a closer, he’s gasoline on a fire.
To invoke Ben Folds, the dude needs to learn to live with what he is… or get the hell off this roster.
I would have had a hard time forgiving the bullpen had they managed to blow that one. I’m actually in the Pittsburgh area and was at last night’s ballgame. That would have been one lousy way to spoil what was pretty much a perfect evening in every other respect. I’m hoping to get to all four games this weekend though the only other one I currently have seats for is Monday.
I’ll tell you this much, they sure do know how to put on a fireworks display here. Mets win, perfect weather, Collective Soul mini-concert, and fireworks….it doesn’t get much better.
Too bad you missed REO Speedwagon the other night…
