-A lot of players are on a tour this morning of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

-John Maine will be activated to start tonight. Carlos Muniz was optioned last night to make room for him. Maine has been on the disabled list, retroactive to July 29, with a mild strain of his right rotator cuff. He says he’s fine, but one must figure the Mets will be easy with him.
-With righty Jason Bergmann going tonight for the Nationals, look for Daniel Murphy to be back in left in place of Nick Evans.
-No word yet on when Ryan Church will start playing in rehab games.

Wow… JD, I found this following comment on a phillies blog:

Uh oh:
AP (Los Angeles, California)- Numerous reports are indicating that a prominent member of the Philadelphia Phillies will soon be suspended for his first infraction of Major League Baseball’s steroid policy. According to a reputable source, the player has known about the suspension for over two weeks, but was in the process of appealing it, an attempt which has apparently failed. When asked about the situation, Philadelphia’s manager, Charlie Manuel to hal, indicated that he had heard something was about to happen, but would not say anything further. After a loss to the Dodgers last night, the Phillies are 1 game ahead of the Mets and 1.5 ahead of the Marlins.
Any truth to this? Could it be Howard? Utley? PLEEEEASE!!!
I hope it’s Lidge.
Nope not true, I just noticed the typos in the post, supposedly it was created by a mets fan and posted around some blogs. Too bad, I would have loved to see big ryan or chutley gone for the season.
Maine is starting today. So people like me who thought having a mild rotator cuff sprain was like being a little pregnant are proven to be Chicken Little’s.
Dan:
Here’s how I see it.
1) John Maine is a pitcher with a sore rotator cuff.
2) He has already missed a start.
3) This isn’t the first time he’s had a problem with his arm this year.
To me, that adds up to having every right to be concerned.-JD
Even though he struck out in his pinch hitting appearance last night, I thought Murphy had a very good at bat, working the count deep and fouling off some tough pitches before he ended up K’ing. I think at the very least, the Mets found themselves a capable lefty pinch hitter to count on. Much better than Marlon Anderson or Argenis Reyes.
John, I just remember how when Jose Reyes first came here, he had injuries that were described as day to day that turned into weeks. But with the state of baseball today, you have to be concerned about virtually every pitcher staying healthy.
I think they are nuts to bring Maine back and have him throw a hundred pitches. This is a rotator cuff. Every indication is that Niese could pitch up here. Are they so cheap about “putting him on the clock” that they would mess with Maine? Hard to trust the judgment of a front office that so badly botched the Church affair.
“This isn’t the first time he had troubles with his arm”
I don’t recall Maine having problems with his right arm or shoulder ever before. He has had blisters on his right fingers, a sore hip and a crap in his left arm since being a Met. What right arm/shoulder problems?
Sccopcoop: He left his start in St. Louis with a tired arm.-JD
What is the A Reyes in the lineup in the 2 hole again? Has Murphy not shown enough (at least MORE than A. Reyes) that a logical person would put him in the 2 hole and bat A. Reyes 8th? I don’t get this, just don’t get it.
oops JD, forgot about that one.
Bob – I agree re: the two hole, but I think it’s the same problem we had when we moved Beltran to the two hole – bottom of the lineup is too weak
