Make up game this afternoon at Shea. Pedro Martinez will make his third start since July 12 today vs. Pittsburgh.
In a little over 11 innings in those two games he’s given up five homers.
He’s calling it rust.
With Damion Easley as cold as ice and Argenis Reyes remembering what kind of player he is, is anyone else out there getting nervous about second base as I am? With Castillo leaving the club, I wonder if the Mets will give Mr. Murphy a shot at playing second.
And Joe Smith continues to struggle.
And here we go! Bullpen blunders! Joy!
Maybe the bullpen can actually blow the game before the 9th today.
99 pitches for Pedro…
Pedro is 150 lbs and 100 years old.
Dont know the implication there with the 99 pitches. However, there was no way you send Pedro back out there especially since he came up in the 6th…..
It all comes down to walks. When you have awful teams down. The only way they will get back into the games is with walks.
It made a whole lot of sense to intentionally walk Livas to bring the tying run up to the plate, wow. Just wow.
He didnt intetionally walk Rivas he just isnt a very good pitcher.
Bob: Well he’s going with matchups and since Feliciano has been pitching well, I can understand it a little bit. It didn’t work out, but that’s what happens anyway when your pen is crappy.
David, that was Pedro attempting to pitch around Rivas to set up a DP, but you’re right he isn’t a very good pitcher. Him and Smith aren’t even average pitchers. The mets need to sit these two clowns, either call up more kids from the minors (they can’t be worse than these scrubs) or get something, anything on waivers.
Bob: Sorry I disagreed with your Beltran comment at the top. I’m watching on gameday so I don’t know if was a hard hit ball, but it would have been nice to see a run scoring base hit.
I was willing to forgive Smith last year for his second half implosion, but not 2 years in a row, he has been awful lately, and it is the same set of issues he had last year.
Well lets just hope we can get the run home here to give the pen some help. Hopefully Tatis can come up big. Just a sac fly at the very least.
That was disgraceful. If the Mets manage to lose this game, it will be the worst loss of the season by far. It would be inexcusable.
Awful awful job. Between the walks and the lack of situational hitting the Mets are looking like they want to give the Pirates this game the last two innings.
Of course the Piartes have been playing much of the game like theyve wanted to give it to the Mets so who knows.
Heilman or Kunz warming?
And they go down meekly. AARGH!!! I’m ready to start throwing things again.
Heilman coming into the game. I’ll pray for us.
At least our closer has a 5.39 era, wait.. what
That was ball four too.
Doumit… here comes the three run bomb!
Good job, Sisk Jr.
I expected this so it doesn’t hurt as much.
Like I said…THE WORST LOSS SOON TO BE OF THE SEASON!!!
Show to finish the job (intentionally vague).
Lets not just not just put this on Heilman sure his “closer stuff” looked horrible today but when your righty specialist cant get a righty and your lefty specialist cant get a left you’re pretty much up shits creek.
What was the offense thinking only getting a 1 run lead?
I left work today watching the game on Yahoo with the Mets up 5-1… thinking they did Ok and helped Pedro get a win. My implication with Pedro getting 99 pitches was that I was happy with that—anything close to 100 should be a good night for him at this so, no, I didn’t expect him out there in the seventh. I didn’t think
5-1, and I get home-now I can watch it on mlb.tv, but presumably the game is over by now-and I come to find out the score is 5-4 with Heilman in trouble.
At least Stephen Pearce is up.
You can’t stop Stephen Pearce you can only hope to contain him (at least the Mets bullpen can’t).
honestly im usually a pretty level headed even keel fan try not to get too high with wins or too low with losses but for the love of god how the f—k do we expect to win anything with these absolute clowns in the pen. By far the worst mixture of guys in a bullpen. There is not one guy in that pen who isnt afraid to throw their fastball for a strike.
Smith, Feliciano, Heilman, the offense are all to blame. They were given multiple opportunities to add on runs and couldn’t come thru. This will be the worst loss of the season. No matter how many leads this team has blown this year, this will be the one they look back on as the one that cost them the NL East if it comes down to one game. All this game has shown me is that they learned nothing from last year about taking the weaker teams for granted. They continue to do so, and they are going to pay for it. Not to mention this team will not win with this bullpen, so I don’t know why we are even expecting them to.
Also Jerry should shank that home plate umpire. Absolute trailer park clown.
I by no way am defending the offense as they missed many chances. But a 4 run lead against one of the worst group of hitters ive seen in my adult life is absolutely ridiculous. And jerry needs to rip them publicly or something to light a fire under them or something.
Field goal kickers/bullpen…. Guys spend hours putting their team in posiiton to win and get screwed by guys who play for a few minutes and can’t do their job. Pretty soon teams will have 3 subs and 9 relievers and it won’t get any better.
Better not wave to the pen tomorrow Mr Interim. The rich kid better go nine no matter what.
Sloppy, at least “rich kid” has a day job. Look into one.
Bucs, 10 runs in 5 games prior to today. Ugh!
Bob: Is metsblog paying you to destroy the competition?
Take a look at the math
90wins. Mets need to go 28-16, .636=no way
88wins. 26-18, .590=very unlikely
86wins. 24-20, .545=maybe
86 wins for Phils. 22-22, .500
Add in 20 blown saves vs 8 for Phils=big advantage Phils
Forget wild card. Unless Mil and StL completely die, they can get to 90 playing .500 or so BB.
Your math is incorrect, you failed to take into account that there is less than a third of the season remaining. That would make it, 7 blown saves are in store for the metsies and 3 for the Phils. And yes, for the mets to end with 86 wins they need to finish 24-20, but who says that those 7 blown saves aren’t accounted for in those 20 losses?
My point is that the chances for the Mets are slim. Unless the BP has a transformation back to the 10 game win streak, they are in trouble.
The Mets aren’t going to get anywhere unless the bullpen problem is solved or the offense can outslug everyone which with the way they situational hit, it’s not going to happen. I’ve been the eternal optimist, but yesterday’s loss was crushed me as a fan. It’s like the end of the movie, “Revenge of the Nerds,” when Louis says he finally has come to the realization that he IS a Nerd. Well I’ve come to the realization that this bullpen is not going to improve, the offense isn’t going to tack on runs and outslug everyone, and that this team is flawed in so many ways. This team isn’t winning a thing.
Willie Randolph had to be sitting at home watching the game yesterday saying out loud to no one “See? What are you supposed to do? Someone please tell me what the manager is supposed to do?”
Don’t give up hope. The Mets could rattle off another winning streak.
Taylor: That is one thing I will give Manuel credit for. Willie would have still been saying..”Hey, I believe in my guys…they’ll turn it around.” Totally ignoring the fact that if it hasn’t changed over 120 games, it’s not going to change. Anyway, hope in my mind is gone because they are repeating the exact same thing that happened to them in the collapse last year. They need to seriously take 6 of 7 in order for me to regain any confidence. Lucky for the Mets that Florida and Philly lost last night.
