We get Brian Stokes tonight against Florida. The Mets hold nearly a 2-to-1 advantage in runs scored through the first three innings and Stokes could use some of that support tonight.
I have a good feeling about Stokes today. Big win yesterday for the Mets takes alot of pressure off of them today. I’ll be happy with 6 innings of 2-3 runs out of Stokes. And in a side note, that Angels team out in Anaheim is for real. All the talk about the Mets bullpen, this Yankees bullpen is terrible too. Wheels are falling off in the 8th and I love it.
BH
I don’t feel very confident about tonight with Stokes. I would be surprised if we get more than 3 off Olson.
Jimmy dean
Why, what makes Scott Olsen so special??? Are we going to anoint him as Sandy Koufax? Mets are 3-1 against Olsen in his career. I’m not worried at all, it’s not like the matchup is Stokes vs Hamels. Mets win in a blowout tonight!!!
BH
I hope you’re right, but I didn’t like the way we looked last time against Olson, and I just think the Marlins will hit Stokes hard. Let’s hope I am dead wrong.
Jay L
This feels like such a throwaway game
David
Well i think we need to draw a happy median here between Jimmy Dean and BH. If the mets can get anywhere near 6 innings and 2-3 runs from Stokes i honestly think you may see Jerry manual doing Ozzie like cartwheels on the field.
As for the offense Olsen is essentially Florida’s own “Coin Flip”. While he has some great stuff if you are patient with him not only can you get to him but you can get his pitch count up and get him out of there. He’s only gone more than 6 innings only once in his last 6 starts…..
Ray Sadecki
Nice start for the Metsies. 4 zip as Delgado crushes another homer.
David
Well JD it looks like the offense may have been listening to your comments earlier with the 4 run first. This should help Stokes out, it would be huge if he could come out here in the 2nd and shut the door and get the offense back in there. Also, maybe Jimmy Dean new something we didnt.
Jimmy dean
Well I know it’s early but my happy median is the Mets offense exploding for 4 runs in the 1st inning to give Mr. “96 mph on the gun” Brian Stokes some breathing room.
David
Looking good so far Jimmy. Definitely seems like he could work out the pen. Will be interesting to see the adjustments 2nd time through the lineup. Great job getting through that inning without a run after the lead off double. Mets lineup cannot rest however they must continue to aplly pressure.
BH
So far so good!
Oh, and Mike Jacobs is a freaking moron, way to toss that ball into the stands!
Ray Sadecki
Evans is hitting the ball hard almost every AB now, I likey.
Jimmy dean
Ok, well I never said I was a genious, but still. Stokes looks good so far, just left that fastball up in the zone and Cantu crushed it. I think the offense will score some more runs for him though. And my prediction of 6 innings 2-3, still looks good. ;-)
David
Well you know someone was going to catch that high fastball eventually, like i said offense must keep applying the pressure.
David
Good inning for Stokes nice to see him work his secondary pitches albeit against the bottom of the lineup 5ip 2R. Not bad so far but I will continue to say the offense has got to get back to work.
Jimmy dean
Nice outing by Stokes, I was off by 1 run on my prediction…but he kept the Mets in the game. Made two mistakes all game. Let’s hold this now and score some runs and take this series.
David
Well unfortunate for stokes that he couldnt figure out the pitch to get jacobs there. I would of preferred high fastball but he got beat on a good changeup. Either way I’ve been screaming it all night and unfortunately its come to fruition the offense had to keep the pressure on Olsen he settled in and the Marlins got to stokes so here we go new game.
Ray Sadecki
David, You were right. Now its tied up. Offense has gone to sleep after the big first. Why cant they get runs later in games?
David
One last thing about stokes, I think he earned himself a spot in that pen. He throws really mid 90’s all night with some nice off speed pitches, however he did have trouble with the lefties especially the better hitting ones.
Ray Sadecki
Wow!! When are they gonna come out with the Murphy jerseys?
alex
the kid is legit.
David
Well how about Murph’s power potential opposite field versus the lefty in a big spot. Just wow. Hey Ray i guess the offense shut us up about tacking on runs !!!!
All kidding aside lets hope the bullpen does the job now. 3 run lead going into the 7th gotta have it.
alex
wow is right.
pinch hit opposite field hr off a lefty.
i know he wasn’t as highly touted and i’m not saying he’s going to be as good, but i haven’t been this excited by a prospect’s arrival to the big leagues since wright came up.
Ray Sadecki
Its horn tooting time. I first mentioned Mr. Murphy here about a month ago when he moved over to 2nd base in AA. I love this kid.
David
Ray,
You can absolutely toot your horn I remember you mentioning him because I tempered your your expectations by point out Evans stats in AA. Wow was i wrong so far.
David
Well lucky to get out of that with a two run lead. Cant like smith giving up the two hits to the righties although the big hit to jacobs should of been caught…
Harry Chiti
I’m no Manuel fan but I do give him credit for sticking with Heilmann after that bad 9th the other day. And I do remember last April Delcos saying Heilmann had closer stuff. He’s had closer stuff the last 2 nights and did what poison Wagner wouldn’t dream of doing, and that’s getting more than a 3 out save. Tip of the hat to all 3 guys.
Harry: Agreed. I don’t Manuel had any choice but to come back to him. When a manager puts a player in a role and yanks him when he screws up once, he loses credibility with the rest of the team.
Heilman does have closer stuff, but what we don’t know about him over the long haul is if he has a closer mentality.-JD
JohnM
If I had a sister I would want Daniel Murphy to marry her. He’s dreamy.
big baby
jerry pulling sanchez was inexcusably bad. short in the bullpen already. sanchez threw 14 pitches and was sharp as hell. 4 run lead. instead you burn your 2 best specialists while giving the marlins clear platoon advantages. then you leave an overworked heilman to close a game with muniz/kunz as the safety yet.
unfathomably bad managing.
David
sometimes the name matches the post
big baby
if you can explain to me how burning smith/feliciano when you had a sharp sanchez who has thrown 1 pitch since august 2nd going, with a 4 run lead, leaving an overworked heilman to close with no safety net, then please, go ahead, enlighten me.
did it cost us tonight? no.
but bad managing now portends to bad managing in the future.
David
well baby the big concern with sanchez and his lack of velocity lately had been a tired arm hence the 1 pitch since august 2nd. Did the time off attribute to his looking sharp tonight who knows. However, he did look good and was pumping in the high eighties and even touched 90 a few times. So after a 7th that saw the Mets increase the lead to what should be a comfortable 4 run lead why increase he’s workload?
David
his workload sorry for the grammar error there fellas
Mike C.
Another day, another thoroughly disappointing spot-starter from the AAAA trash-heap.
Saved by the bats, thank God.
Jimmy dean
Disappointing?????? What game did you watch Mike C.? Seriously, I think some people just make comments on these blogs, to either a) piss people off b) piss me off c)all of the above. I’m going to go with C.
Mike C.
Gave up four runs, couldn’t even get through six innings.
If that’s not disappointing to you, I don’t know if you can BE disappointed.
With this napalm bullpen, the least you can do is soak up enough innings so that the Mets don’t have to use five relievers to get ten outs.
Awful.
Tiffany
Yeah, really bad decision on Sanchez. He hasn’t pitched in a week because of arm problems, so last night would have been the perfect time to stretch him to an additional inning and see if the arm problems would return again. In fact, on second thought, Mr. Interim should have left him for the multi-inning save. What would be the worst-case scenario—another week of inactivity?
Harry Chiti
So you like the name Mr Interim! If you noticed, I gave Mr Interim credit for his handling of Heilmann this week. I also agree stretching Sanchez past an inning would make no sense, last night and probably for rest of season. And he’s handling the kids in left well…. I don’t want to go further or I’ll have to call him Mr Permanent to be or something like that.

I really like seeing Murphy play, and it is not only because he is hot, okay well mostly!
Are the lineups out?
Here’s your lineup 94:
J Reyes
A Reyes
Wright
Delgado
Beltran
Murphy
Schneider
Chavez
Pelfrey
for Fish:
Ramirez
Gonzalez
Cantu
Jacobs
Uggla
Ross
Hermidia
Treanor
Johnson
Stokes was registering 95,96, and even 97 once on the stadium radar gun readout. About the same as Heilman. He throws hard.
So far the best thing about Murphy’s defense is his offense.
