Wagner to DL; Heilman is closer

August
5

The Mets placed Billy Wagner on the disabled list after a MRI confirmed a strained left forearm and manager Jerry Manuel said veteran Aaron Heilman would be the closer.

ph_123790.jpg“This is good news because it is nothing major,” general manager Omar Minaya said of the diagnosis. “We’re trying to be cautious with him.”

Manuel said Heilman’s experience and ability to handle both right handed and left handed hitters was his determining factor in choosing him over prospect Ed Kunz.

Wagner felt discomfort last week at Florida, and again when he blew a save Saturday at Houston.

“I wasn’t able to finish my pitches,” Wagner said. “I am not able to go in consecutive days.”

Taking Wagner’s spot will be Triple-A reliever Ruddy Lugo.

    JD-

Is there ANY news on Ryan Church? I mean, I understand the overly cautious route after what happened, but we went from this guy taking BP and playing in rehab games this past weekend to him taking INDOOR BP on Sunday after not taking any on Friday.

He was supposed to be re-examined yesterday. They say “no setback”

    What gives?

Where is Doug Sisk when you need him?

Mike: Still day-to-day. Setback? Of course this is a setback. What else can it be?-JD

I don’t believe a word of what Omar said about Wagner, nor do I believe Wagner himself.

This team seems unable to give us the real truth about the condition/health of its’ players – Church, for example, or Pedro.

I’m just hoping Pelfrey is ready for a complete game. (i.e. the former Met, Nolan Ryan’s way of pitching).

The good news: Heilman is the best candidate for the job.

The bad news: Heilman is the best candidate for the job.

Kunz came from AA. He ain’t ready. Don’t want to overwhelm him. If Wags stays out too long Kunz will get his shot cause everyone else can’t do the job.
