Maine will miss a turn
Dan Murphy has been promoted to AAA. If Omar were to follow through on his suggestion that an influx of kids from the minors might be preferable to trad-deadline acquisitions, the question becomes who, from the current roster, would be shown the door? Would he possibly cut Marlon Anderson, or would it be Robinson Caruso?
Problem for Murphy is he has moved back to 2b from 3b b/c of DW.
Unless the Mets go out of character and toss Castillo away, he is blocked.
Plus, since he has not played 2b since HS, I’m sure he needs some more time.
My understanding is that, wherever he plays (3B, 2B, OF), Murphy will be a butcher. As such, the Mets are considering him as a utility-type guy who can pinch-hit and then take over in the field on a double-switch.
I think the preparatory work for Niese and Murphy suggests that they’ll both be given August auditions, probably at the expense of Maine (or even Pedro) and someone like Cancel or Argenis Reyes.
