Last Call in the Chat Room: Wrapping up the loss.

July
30

-Ryan Church will go to Houston and not PSL for rehab games. Church didn’t think he’d play tomorrow anyway. Jerry Manuel said the Mets want to observe him a little longer and would not call this delay a setback.

-Mike Pelfrey pointed the finger at himself, saying he made lousy pitches. This was Pelfrey’s first loss since May 26 against Florida at Shea.

-The Marlins appear close to getting a deal done for Manny Ramirez. The Mets don’t appear close to anything major. Who knows if they’ll do anything minor. They won’t make a big deal if they hold onto Fernando Martinez and Jon Niese.

-Check out the new poll. Tiffany is right, I have to change these more often.

hey omar midnight bowling is over time to get to work if you want a job next yr. anderson must go my seven yr old is faster than him with hiws limp he blows how can we say every prospect is untouchable if that is the case here are the moves kunz and parnell replace muniz smith pascucci replaces anderson and we pray the starters hold up.. wake up omar or youre tenor is 58 games you blow

    No More Big Dumb Trades.

  3. Jimmy dean

    trade for Guillermo Mota!!!

  4. Ray Sadecki

I was looking at binghamton stats. Niese has some pretty nice numbers, I dont know why hes untouchable, though. For all the hype, Fmart has been injury prone, and doesnt have eye popping stats either. Every other contender is making moves, getting ready for the stretch drive. If Omar doesnt make a move, I think the mets and thier fans will feel let down.

not make a move he will for a new 40 yr old ballplayer that gets hurt all the time oh forgot we did that will teflon alou .. fire omar at 4 tommorrow

Any chance that Church is still hurt and that this announced trip to Houston is merely a ploy to bring down the asking price for someone like Ibanez?

I’m glad the Mets are not doing a deal.

As reported in Foxsports.com, the Mets or Omar (as GM of Expos) have been involved in 4 of the top 10 worst deadline deals ever.

This past 3 games should indicate that getting some so-so OF or RP is not gonna put the Mets over the top to win a WS. They only have a so-so chance to win the division and no shot at the WC. One OF of the likes of even a Bay or a RP like Chad Bradford is not enough of a difference maker to sell off what little remains down in NO/Bing, etc…

Better off holding on to what they have, b/c in the long term if a ML club does not have some farm hands they are not going to be able to compete year in and yr out.

I’m tired of having a roller coaster org to root for. I want the Mets to compete each yr. The lack of quality FAs will require even big market teams to build from within.

Sign OP, sign Texieria, sign Krod (maybe the last of some decent crop of FAs) and keep FMart, Niese, etc..

These other teams can make deals b/c they have depth in their farm sys. It is not b/c Omar does not want to do it.

I’m glad he is holding pat b/c if he trades Niese for Ibanez, 6 mos from now the same people irate over his poor performance will be saying why did Omar trade Niese.

    Thank you scoopcoop,

finally someone with reality. I posted basically the same thing yesterday. The mets have maybe 4 blue chips and that is it and nothing else. If omar trades them away whatever future the mets have is gone and they will have no future. Like scoopoop said, if the mets were real close to winning the world series than maybe but there not. I can see Omar replacing a few players in the bull pen or on the bench from the minors but that is it.

Well, Niese’s AAA debut went well: 7 innings, 1 run, 3 hits, 7 Ks. Historically, the Mets like to fast-track their top prospects by giving them a brief taste of AAA or skipping it altogether. Omar is either trying to prop up Niese’s market value (presumably in a deal for a significant addition) or preparing him for an August call-up (when Maine inevitably goes on the DL).

Two other interesting points for discussion:

1.) Why is Bobby Parnell being considered “untouchable”? Granted, I’ve never seen him pitch and couldn’t tell you whether the ball explodes through the strike zone, but his actual performance doesn’t exactly scream blue-chip prospect.

2.) Why are the Mets shopping Schoeneweis? I can only imagine that they want to clear a spot for someone else (Kunz?).

  12. scoopcoop

    tomg
The Mets might have 2 decent guys in Niese and FMart. Carp, Evans and Murphy are ok. After that it is junk.

    Niese

I think the Mets want to move him into the rotation next yr. I just hope it is not as a replacement for OP but a replacement for Pedro (he is done).

    Parnell
saw him pitch in ST. He was ok.

    Show
This has to be salary only move.

  13. David

    Scoop,

I know he’s years away from Queens but you got to be a little impressed with Wilmer Flores. Sure its only Rookie Ball but look at the numbers.

    .331 AVG 7 HR 30 RBI .917 OPS

And probably the most impressive stat he’ll turn 17 in August.

  14. Mike C.

Show will only regress as the bullpen tires and he’s put into more situations against righties and in high-leverage situations… dumping Show for ANYTHING of value would be a major plus, if we’re talking about minor tweak moves.

  15. scoopcoop

and who do you replace Show with Mike C?

Fact is that Heilman, Feliciano and Show all have bad lefty/righty splits. That is why the BP is struggling.

Especially w/Sanchez running out of steam anytime he has to pitch several days in a row.

And that is why getting one so-so BP arm to go w/the many so-so BP arms already there, won’t make alot of difference.

The Mets are going to have to get 6-7-8 inn every nite from there starters to win this thing. It is a tall order. One that might not be filled.
