Jerry Manuel said if there is any pain John Maine won’t make his next start.
That he started last night with shoulder soreness is the most important question to be asked today of Manuel.
Check back for his response.
Manuel is just saying that the player must be honest about any change in his health/condition.
Doesn’t this situation call for the player to do the right thing and admit if their condition is questionable? Or, are players so intent on playing that they will not admit to any weakness, pain or soreness?
Could this type of misrepresentation be what caused some of the Church problems?
Unless the Mets are completely lying (which certainly wouldn’t be the first time), they are saying that the pain in his shoulder is in the back, slightly below the deltoid.
Chances are he has a strain or tendinitis if it is truly in that area. Maine may be a competitor and truly hurting, but I doubt that he’s out there throwing 90+ with something torn.
Again, if he’s sore where the Mets say it is and truly not near the rotator cuff or anything, my guess is that it’s just a muscle strain.
Annie – I think the players want to play. They want to win, and wipe away the bad feelings from last year. Maine may not have wanted to “let his team down” by leaving early.
Add to that the heat that Billy took last week when he missed the Philly game, and I think some players would rather try to play through something that people may consider “minor” as opposed to having fans or some in the media (not John), question their desire. Even Beltran took some heat in the past when he took time off if he wasn’t 100%.
hopefully Maine is OK. They need him. Big time.
If every professional athlete stopped performing when they had a tweak of some kind we’d be seeing HS players on the field by the end of the season.
Maine pitched w/pain and soreness in his hip most of the 2nd half last yr. They thought he might have a hernia. It turned out to be nothing.
Heilman pitched w/issues in his arm and had a minor surgery after the 06 season. He then pitched w/tendonitis in his elbow last yr and came out ok.
Braden Looper played with a bad arm in 05 and had to have surgery.
Schowenweis pitched w/a severned tendon in his knee and he was ok after the season.
Pedro picthed w/pain and soreness in his hip in 06 and messed up his arm.
Point is you never know exactly when something can be played through and when it can not. It is not an exact science. The manager and the rest of the management staff can only gain so much insight by how the player reacts and what they tell them. If Maine said he was ok before the game and then was adamant about not coming out of the game and then sat on the bench makes me feel that it was not that serious or that Maine was trying to show that he was ok. Only time wil tell.
To insinuate that the Mets sent Maine out there w/a major problem is unfair.
Maybe the Mets messed up the Church situation by not getting the proper Drs involved or maybe Church’s insistance to play was the issue. Who knows for sure.
Thanks. Thanks for posting this. It is always nice to see someone help out the interet.
