Hey, Metsiac, I havent seen that name in awhile. I remember you from nyfs before ed went crazy over there and banned everybody that disagreed with him. My handle then was reyesmat (for the then dp combo of reyes-matsui)boy, that seems like ages ago. I hope you keep posting here. It gets a bit quiet sometimes, but everybody knows your name, like cheers. Btw, if your info is correct, thats even more reason to keep Delgado.

This myth of $16 million for the option just won’t go away. Unless he wins MVP (hardly likely), the option is for TWELVE mil, vs a 4 mil buyout. It’ll cost 8 mil more to keep him that buy him out, which is “chump change” in today’s market.

If he has a solid final two months, keeping him is a no-brainer.

Putting Delgado aside for one moment, I think the bigger question is do we let Oliver Perez walk at the end of the year or sign him to an extension now?

I just blogged about it and I hope you guys (and gals) agree with me.

I think that any decision on Delgado has to wait until the end of the season to see how his numbers are. With that being said, even if he is extraordinary the rest of the way, I do not see him being brought back unless it is a buy out and renogotiate. Carlos is not going to gain any range defensively as he gets older and would be better suited in the American League with the DH in the twilight of his career.

IMO, no way the Mets bring back Delgado regardless of his numbers….too expensive and too risky! With that said, keep knocking the crap out of the ball Carlos….we love it!

Of course hes not going to keep hitting like this all year. He would end up with Ruthian numbers if he did. Carlos has been streaky since hes been here. For whatever reason he didnt have any prolonged hot streaks like this in 07 and the first part of this year.

Naturally, the team is not going to make a decision on him until the season is over. I was one of his biggest detractors before, but it may just make sense to pick up the option after all. They are already going to pay him 4 million for the buyout. That means for 12 million more you get him for one more year. He has shown that he can still carry a club and next year he will be 37 not 40.
What other alternatives are out there? Texiera wants a 10 year 200 million contract. I dont see that happening.
Anybody got any other Ideas?

I don’t think I’d bring him back no matter what he does. I loved the trade when he first came in and still love the trade but after this year, no reason to have the declining Delgado in the lineup.
Don’t want a 40 year old Delgado on the Mets…

Unless Delgado hits .400 the rest of the way, I say maybe bring him back, but via buyout and resign at less than his $16 million option. No way he can keep this up, and without doing so, he isn’t worth $16 million next year.
