Mets Chat Room: First place, how about that?

July
25

Mets vs. Cards at Shea tonight. Sustaining is the word for the day.

Keep the momentum going. Open some ground.

I like Mike Pelfrey, always have. And, it would be nice for Carlos Delgado to stay hot.

The guy I want to break out is Carlos Beltran.

Hello? Hello, hello, hello. Wow there is an echo in here.

Don't go down there Doc, it's dark down there – Bugs Bunny

    Tiffany?
    Annie?
    Tomg?

    JD?

    Anybody?

  2. Ray Sadecki

Im here. Guess lots of people are hitting the town tonight.

  3. Annie Savoy

    clm –

Thanks for asking – I'm here – listening as always to WFAN radio with Howie and Wayne, but I'm also watching the Sox and the Yankees on NESN. Big Games in New England when those teams meet.

I agree with John about the Mets in first place. Now's the time to rack up as many wins as possible – let's really run away with the NL East lead this year!

  4. Annie Savoy

Reyes must be reading the blog – a triple!!

  5. clm

Well hello Ray and Annie. Good game so far. Gary Cohen just said that the Yanks traded for Nady and another Pirate for 4 prospects including Ohlendorf.

Annie – You are correct – Let's build a lead!!!

Ray – Sorry I left you out but glad to see you here too.

everyone else must be at the ballgame.

  6. Ray Sadecki

I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago, and i will say it again. I want to see Reyes in the 3 hole. They are wasting his extra base power in the leadoff spot. He is one of the best clutch hitters on the team. I also want Beltran hitting second. What do you think of a 1 2 3 of Castillo, Beltran, Reyes?

  7. clm

Not so sure about Castillo but I would like to at least see Beltran moved to the 2 hole because that's where he's always at his best.

So who's 4th and 5th supposing that Church is back soon (lets hope)

  8. Ray Sadecki

I cant believe Nady went so cheap. Mets destroyed Ohlendorf and he is the top prospect dealt. Martes a good reliever too.

  9. Ray Sadecki

Clm, Delgado and Wright, Just like in 06.

  10. Ray Sadecki

Delgado does it again. Pick up the option.

  11. Annie Savoy

The Mets are on a roll – don't let up, guys.

  12. clm

I think that some people here and in NY and elsewhere should be seriously thinking of apologising to Carlos Delgado. Dare I say it – Without him they are not where they are now.

  13. clm

Ray I actually like that for many reasons. Castillo is my only concern. Unless he is the Castillo of old when he gets back.

Won't happen though. I would like to see Beltran put there in the 2 hole for sure. Get him going and this team is really going to take off.

  14. Annie Savoy

5-0. Is LaRussa freaking out yet?

  15. clm

    He's not a happy camper.

  16. Annie Savoy

Ray – I've always said that Jose Reyes is one of the best lead off men in the game. He's fast, he's versatile and he can hit anything. Not many with all those attributes, plus his energy gets the team going.

  17. Annie Savoy

    FYI

At Fenway, Yankees 1, Sox 0 – 6th inning – starters Joba and Beckett still in the game.

  18. Scott from Pelham

    Ray
Castillo batting leadoff makes a lot of sense if healthy.
Beltran , Reyes 2& 3 is good but who do you bat 4th right now Delgado or Wright.

btw Tabata is the top prospect in the Yankee deal.
many consider him on the same level as F-Mart.
I can't believe the Yankees are giving up on him.
He was considered their best outfield prospect.
I did here about some off field things, maybe this is why they are giving up on him.

  19. Ray Sadecki

I know it will probably never happen. Maybe we can do the Larussa thing and let Castllo hit 9th with pitcher 8th. I just know that if Reyes was in a run producing spot he would drive in 100 easily. Maybe later in his career he will move there.

  20. David

    Ray,

I agree that jose has the skill set to be a succesful 3 hitter. However he would go from being one of the most dynamic leadoff men the game has seen to just another very good 3 hitter.

  21. Ray Sadecki

Back to the Nady trade, If Tabata is the main piece its even worse than I thought. This guy is 2 weeks short of his 30th birthday and is hitting .248 with 3 home runs. He is currently on the disabled list to boot. How do the yankees always have this kind of luck?

  22. David

    Ray,

Jose Tabata is 19 years old. 2 weeks short of 20.

  23. matt B in AZ

not to focus on the negative but if it weren't for Wags, Pelf would haven been in the 10 win club by now.

  24. matt B in AZ

and i agree with whoever said that we all owe delgado an apology.

    i'm sorry carlos.

  25. Ray Sadecki

David, Right. My math is just a little bit off. That said, I know this kid had a lot of hype a couple of years ago, but his numbers at AA do not impress me. Seems like he gets injured a lot too.

  26. Annie Savoy

And now a home run from the other Reyes – Congratulations!

  27. David

    Ray,

Yeah he's def a toolsy kid. Keep in mind in 3 minor league seasons prior to this his lowest AVG was .298.

Is Argenis Reyes our Alfredo Amezega ? I like what he's brought to the team.

  28. Ray Sadecki

David, I dont pay attention to players below AA. Thats pretty much where the real prospects get seperated from the pretenders.

  29. David

In the last 3 games Met pitching has struck out Chase Utley, Ryan Howard & Albert Pujols a combined 9 times. WOW

  30. clm

Are the Mets going to make a move? I don't think so – what's the consensus here?

  31. David

So mike hampton starts tomorrow for the braves. Over/Under 3 innings ?

  32. clm

    Endy the hit machine.

  33. Annie Savoy

When Omar spoke this morning, he didn't have an answer to your question. I hope they don't make any moves – this team has come to life on its' own.

  34. David

Whatever they do I just hope they dont make a move for the sake of making a move.

  35. BH

I don't think the Mets can afford to make a significant deal this year. Next year hopefully we will know what we have with the latest crop of picks from the draft and then we can think of moving one or two of the few decent pieces in our system…but to do it this year would trip us bare, which is just a bad way to go.

Hey Burgos will be back next year, right? Would be great if he came back throwing as hard as before, but much more accurately!

  36. Ray Sadecki

David, The 3 strikouts of Howard arent that surprising, but Pujols was.
Clm, I see them doing a deal where they take on salary to keep the return on players down. Ive been seeing some Brian Giles rumors, and that would be the kind of deal i expect to see. Omar wont stand pat again after he got burned for it last year.

  37. BH

What is wrong with Sanchez, he isn't even close to hitting 90, much less 94, on the gun. And why isn't the staff reacting to that fact?

  38. Kevin

Wow I was watching the gamecast as Lidge imploded in Philly, I wonder what the reaction to him being pulled off the mound after giving up 5. People must have thought Santa Claus had come back.

  39. David

its really a shame that wagner would even have to get up in this 9th inning.

  40. NYMetsGrrl94

the Nady deal makes me want to cry

  41. Ray Sadecki

yeah, They need bullpen help and a bat, just like the trade the yankees made.

  42. dave

    I guess Sanchez is slumping.

Endy is our new #3 hitter.

    BigPelf is continuing his roll

I want to see Delgado the whole year before I give an opinion on what to do about his option. He was bad for most of a year and a half and has been good for a few weeks now.

Omar won't tip his hand and he shouldn't. We will just have to wait.

  43. Annie Savoy

Howie has put this game in "The Book". Thanks for your company this evening.

    Here's some advice for Jerry:
Have your starter finish and stop counting pitches.

Weekend Schedule: Saturday 7PM, Sunday 1PM.

  44. BH

If I recall correctly in 2006 after Sanchez had been so good early, when the wheels came off, they came off hard for about 4 appearances, and then he got better again. Hopefully that's what is going on here.

  45. dave

    BigPelf

    tops in wins
    second in era
    second in innings

Wow. To think he was our #6 pitcher in the spring.

  46. John Delcos

I am with Mets Girl on the Nady deal. One more reason to hate the Yankees. As if you need another.-JD

  47. Mike C.

Now THAT's how I wanna see Anderson used!

In garbage time pity at-bats only!

(Nady would'a been a nice piece but in no way worth what he would'a cost.)

  48. Stillsane

I too was hoping for Nady to be back with the Mets and even thought that Marte was impressive as a reliever in the little I saw him pitch. I just think that the Mets were not willing to trade with the pieces that Pittsburgh wanted, including the pick up by the Pirates of one of our existing lefties (probabaly Show). I wish Nady well, but, if I had to be truthful, I really wish he was traded somewhere else. As was mentioned, I hope this does not leasd Omar trading to make just to make a trade. The Mets need to fill certain needs with trades, not just make the back page.

  49. scoopcoop

Nady-Mets just didn't have the players to trade. That shows the lack of depth in the farm sys.

Sanchez-I think his arm strength is not there. I just hope what Manueal said after the game about changing his routine to drop the long tossing will improve his stamina by not using it up b/w appearances.

  50. dave

Just read an article in the times which reminded me that peterson forbade BigPelf from throwing his curve and switched him to a slider i think.

Now with a new coach he is throwing the curve for strikes and winning.

    How about that?
