Exactly the lineup i thought we’d see today. I like getting evans in there with the lefty pitching. Hopefully good oliie is here today and gets us the series.
Anything not to see Marlon Anderson starting is a worthwhile lineup to me. I’ve had enough of him.
I can’t believe this talk about Reyes showboating last night after his HUGE, can I say that again please, HUGE, 3 run bomb, which turned out to be the game winner. The kid was excited, hell, I was in my house doing cartwheels after that hit!!! I just heard on the pregame show the Phillies announcers commenting on it…give me a f#$%*@g break. Talking about someone should throw at his neck!!! WOW!!!
Thanks JD, i was just giving you a hard time though, you’ve got us spoiled on this blog. I like the lineup today, however I’m not sure I like it against 72MPH Jamie Moyer, it’s difficult for anyone to hit something that slow. I guess they just go up to bat thinking changeup every pitch?
Good news: Rollins was scratched
And the best part about it was Tom McCarthy, who was calling games for the Mets last year with Howie Rose on WFAN commenting negatively!!! What a homer.
Jimmy: Rollins does the exact same thing when he hits a homer. And like I said in another post, Victorino is the guy that deserves to get plunked in the gut.
Steve (and all those other Victorino haters): Say what you will about the guy, but you would love him if he were a Met.-JD
John,
The same could be said times 10 to all the philly fans and announcers bashing reyes and asking for him to be drilled.
No word yet on why Rollins was scratched. Good first inning by Perez.-JD
David,
You sir, get the award for POST OF THE DAY!!!
Great point pal!!
Nice quick 14 pitch inning for Ollie, just need 8 more of those! But will Jerry let the pitch count go past 100? Probably not.
David: Philly fans aren’t asking for Reyes to be drilled. They are circulating petitions.-JD
Bob: Pitch counts …. grrrr …. part of what’s wrong with the sport.-JD
JD – I agree, but with “coin-flip” on the mound (credit to you) if he reaches 100 pitches, you should remove him for the sole sake that he hasn’t imploded YET, think of it as securing your luck.
Bob: Good point.-JD
JD – sorry for the comments section “blog-hogging” on my part, but any word as to why Rollins was scratched for those of us stuck watching gamecast?
Nothing yet on Rollins.-JD
Howie just reported that the Mets are leading the NL in attendance – Guess I was surprised by that.
Ollie is no longer a coin flip. Four solid starts before his domination of filly today tells me the warthog has got him fixed. Who wants to see him leave as a FA now? too bad Boras is his agent.
Will this be Ollie’s implosion inning? Lets hope not.
Wow, that was impressive not to give up a run, great job by Ollie.
My buddy just texted me, “Moyer and Delgado are jawing at each other.” Any truth to this? What’s going on?
Bob: Nah. Moyer swung and missed at a pitch and his bat sailed out to first. Delgado picked it up and threw it back. Harmless stuff.-JD
I don’t understand this team and the inability to hit Moyer, it is beyond frustrating.
Yeah BH its frustrating but seems like moyer’s been doing that to a lot of teams especially lately. Guy knows how to pitch.
...and when did Bruntlett learn to hit?
Howard was struck out. Ump blew the call. now bases loaded.
Looked like a strike on Gamecast too…how deep was Werth’s flyball out, on the computer it looked a bit scary.
That was the game had we given up a run, in my opinoin.
Let me tell you all how frustrating it is to have to be stuck in an office all day and try to follow the game online UGH !
The Philly writers are telling me Rollins was scratched because he was late for the game. How interesting is that?-JD
John,
Probably set his alarm clock incorrectly.
Great job by Perez: one run, six hits, one walk, 12 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. It would be a shame to waste it.-JD
David: Perhaps, but it’s not hard to ask for a wake-up call. All you do is pick up the phone and dial O.-JD
Huge hit by Delgado going the other way against the tough lefty Romero. Can Billy hold the 2 run lead?
Yes, He can. Lets go Mets! Alone in first place !!
What a game! Sole possession of first place! After 104 (?) games of turmoil, it feels WONDERFUL to be in first place!
To quote the great John Stearns “The Monster is out of the cage”
Boy did the mets show me somethng they could of sulked after game 1 but rather they got up and took 2 in a row. Huge series. HUGE performance by Ollie.
Delgado is the new Big Cat. Wagner? Got im. Another good day and 1st place. Where is Tomg when you need him?
Hopefully these 3 games are a continuation of the before AS break picthing the Mets got and that the Reds series was just from getting out of rthym.
B/c if Mets get this kind of SP in most games, they are gonna be fine.
Now if they can just figure out how to beat the Braves, they’ll be in great shape.
I didn’t know you needed me CLM. How can I help you. If it’s money, your out of luck pal. If the Mets didn’t do a melt down in the first game they would be 3 games in front. I admit I am surprised they won the next two. The way the phillies came back i thought for sure they would sweep the mets. If Willie was still managing it might of happened. Great job by Ollie, it looks like the tweak in his mechanics help which doesn’t surprise me because when other posters were saying he might be injured I kept stating that his problems were because of his mechanics.
scoopcoop,
the Mets can beat the braves now that Chipper Jones has a hamstring pull and will probably go on the dl.
Great game by Ollie today..what can you say about the guy. He’s pitching for that 12 million dollar per year contract. Nice job by Heilman though he got the out, the 0-2 pitch wasn’t i’m sure where he wanted it. And Delgado…let’s just hope he keeps this up!!!
Perez and Delgado! Am I dreaming, or what?
tomg,
to take your point one step further if they braves lay an egg in philly this weekend they may be sellers come trade deadline.
An interesting question, If Texiera goes on the market, who will pick him up? Delgados resurgence will allow Mets to focus on other priorities and yanks have half a dozen first Basemen/DH types now.
Classic post on beerleaguer after thier loss ” I’d rather see the taliban on top of the division than the Mets.” Posted by BB at 2:33 PM.
Ray,
That is a classic quote.
As to your question you’d have to think the Angels would be interested as he would fit quite nicely in the middle of that lineup with Vlad and they have the farm system to get him.
Despite Delgado’s surge, I understand that Tex is somebody that Jeff Wilpon really likes. And can you really count on Delagdo to be able to do this for another yr or 2? Besides, if Mets get Tex then FMart can step into LF w/o having to bat higher than 7th. And Mets won’t have to get another big bat for several yrs.
But I could see the Angels scenario. Only problem is that Vlad is gettting paid so little, can they pay somebody else alot more and not upset him. Plus, everything written on Tex says he will go FA no matter where he lands (even if he is moved out of Atl).
Mets will have plenty of $$ coming off the books. I’m even leaning tw giving OP some $$ (but let’s see what Boras demands)....
Scoop: If you can take a look at David O’Brien’s blog on the Atlanta Journal Constitution, he wrote about Texiera being one of those guys who can’t be counted on to do it when a team really needs it. More of a compiler of stats than anything else. He’s going to ask for 23 mil per year it is rumored and his agent is Boras. I’m not sure the Mets are going to go there or if he is even worth it.
Steve (The Original),
I was one of those met fans lobbying to sign Texiera next year but I’ve cooled off on that idea. I didn’t know about that article you mentioned but he hasn’t help the braves be any better and the more i think about it i don’t think it’s a good idea to tie up all that money for Texiera.
Have missed seeing/hearing most of the past two games due to thunder, lightning and heavy rain. I had the radio on and heard Mike Francesa being excited about the Mets now in sole possession of First Place. I hope they don’t get complacent, but continue on as though they need to rack up ++++ games. There’s an old phrase about stomping on your opponents that applies here.
We’ve learned a couple of things in the past month – management style does count, the guys with the biggest paychecks don’t always deliver, pitchers will fail and Fred Wilpon and Sandy Koufax just can’t wait for Citi Field to open.
As for on the field antics – leave Reyes alone – he’s a free spirit with a talent for baseball – reminds me a bit of Ozzie Smith. He has a joy for the game that is a gift, not a pretense.
About Mike Francesa. I’ve listened to him for about 18 years and he used to be a Yankees only guy. That changed about 5 years ago when he married the youngest daughter of a family of eleven children whose Mother was a big Mets fan. He and his wife now have 3yr.old twins and a 2year old son who are being raised as Mets fans by their Mother and Grandmother. Mike has been seen more than once at Shea – with children. Welcome him.
I’m a free lance writer and read and post to several politics, news and sports blogs daily, but this is where I start the day.
Thanks, John.
Francessa is a blow hard. He has no acceptance in my Met world. Unless of course the Mets beat up the Giants and he rags on Russo. :-)
What did Francessa do now?
Tomg – You the man. They have been hurting the Phillies all year even w/Willie. Time to be a glass half full kind of guy.
Gotta Believe (and let go of ‘07).
Later
“San Tanner’s gotta delivuh…”—Mike Francessa.
Any day you start Marlon Anderson is a day you’re overthinking lefty-righty match-ups to a suicidal extreme. Thankfully, today, it was a good day.
I cannot say i liked watching him,Reyes, trot about the bases.
A little victory in the dugout sure. The episode reminded me of when the pitcher grandslammed against the mets and Willie had nothing but nastiness to say about how the pitcher behaved running the bases. and rightly so. run the base. be happy, but dont be an ASS. these are supposed to be professionals. Good winners and Good Losers.
I am glad I was wrong about deglado, but it has to be about how Manuel treats/talks to him. You can tell he’s hitting differently and actually waiting and getting walks. If he keeps this up great otherwise, it was another flash in the pan. But I will accept it for now. However he still sux at first base. that will never change.
Is Delcos alive? Is anyone alive out there? I mean whoever said that this board has many more people here posting when the team is losing than when they are winning were sure right!
Delcos: Time to find a new nickname for Oliver Perez? How about “Shiny side of the coin Perez,” or “Always comes up heads Perez?” Anyway, he’s won the last few coin flips.
Steve,
It has been slow ive been waiting all day for someone to post something i like the banter on here helps break up the work day. Maybe its a big win hangover hopefully the team isnt as flat tonight !
Um so did everyone see that performance by sandwich pick Brad Holt last night. 6ip 2 H 0 R 14 K’s. I dont care if you’re pitching in high school thats a pretty nice line.
David,
Thats an impressive line. What level is Holt pitching at?
Ray,
He’s down at Brooklyn A ball.
OK, Thanks. btw, FMart was taken out of last nights game with a “cramp” in his hammer.
Oops, hammy.
Yeah heard about Fmart. Thats a shame hope its nothing to serious and he can get back to action soon enough for his sake.
A cramp in his hammer? That’s the kind of injury that could really make a man sit down for a week or so.
Tiffany, You just made me laugh out loud. good one. :D
