About Last Night ….

It stands to reason that if Tuesday was a crusher, then the need to win last night was greater than normal.
That’s how I wrote it in The Journal News.
If they lost last night a lot of the good feelings gained from the winning streak might have been lost.
Winning right away made it easier to forget Tuesday.
That was the big thing. Next was John Maine winning for the first time in a month. They go nowhere if he doesn’t pitch well.

John Maine stepped up last night and the Mets did not circle the wagons, which was huge. They came out as a team with something to prove. I hope that will continue for the rest of the season. If nothing else, the change since Willie was fired is that this club has a pulse to it now which was previously absent.
I was at the game last night. The crowd got pretty deflated after Maine gave back the 2 run lead in a matter of seconds. Throwing fastballs to dead fastball hitters like Victorino and Jenkins was inexcusable. I’m glad he settled down though we were all waiting for the next shoe to drop with him. Here is my problem with Maine that I don’t know if i’ve been blind to it…but he has no “out” pitch. He doesn’t have a 99 mph fastball, doesn’t have a wicked curve, slider, or changeup. He relies on movement and if the movement isn’t there, then he has a problem. This will probably keep him from becoming an elite pitcher, IMO.
