Mets Chat Room: Getting on track again edition.

Several Mets said last night’s loss stung more than most. Given that, it stands to reason tonight’s game will take on a greater importance.
John Maine throws for the Mets tonight, and unfortunately, that’s what he’s been doing recently: throwing instead of pitching.
Maine said he’s not attacking the strike zone the way he should be. Maine is 4-0 with a 2.36 ERA in eight career starts vs. Phillies.

Lets hope John isn’t masking an injury. It’s past 6, Billy update?
Billy said he’s available tonight.-JD
JD – The interview they just showed was Duaner posted in front of his locker, yet you said you guys grabbed him as he was trying to duck out. Did you grab him then tell him to go post up in front of the lockers for the cameras? I mean your description sounds like you caught him in the hallway.
Doubt they get this game in, it’s pouring here in NJ. JD how is it there? O yea John, you were right about last night, “expect the unexpected.”
Precipitation is 30% from 7-10 with “scattered t-storms.” They ALWAYS play through scattered t-storms, precipitation doesn’t get up to 60% until 10pm. Their probably won’t even be a delay.
Maine really needs to drill Victorino after that elaborate standing session he did on our home plate last night. Remember, Maine is the only pitcher on this team who has shown that he has his teammates back. The night after the Nationals taunted Figgy, Maine hit their leadoff hitter on the very first pitch. Not saying he’ll hit Rollins tonight, but look for him to retaliate. Hopefully it comes against Victorino.
Bob,
The best way maine can make a statement is a 1-2-3 impressive first. Drilling a nobody does nothing.
After last years collapse I’ve been extremely critical of the Mets and have been attacked by bloggers on this blog that I am to negative and not a met fan. Of course that is far from the truth. After last years collapse how else would a fan feel. The mets are the only team I know that could actually reel me back in believing in them again and than blow it all away in one inning. I have lost all hope for this team. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the Phillies swept the mets. I just don’t think the Mets have the heart and passion or makeup of a winner. I was hoping tonight and tomorrow games would get canceled due to rain. It looks like at least they will play tonight, not good.
I agree, but drilling Easley twice and Blanton trying to take Santana’s head off was a bit excessive.
Bob,
Yeah it prob was a little much, but if they do want to respond you drill Utley or Howard.
Bob (southington, CT),
I mentioned that last night about Victorino. If this was the 86 mets somebody would pay big time. That’s what I’m talking about. This met team has no fire.
Well here it is silver platter 3 walks bases loaded make this guy pay and get in his psychotic head early.
I’m so glad Marlon Anderson is batting in that spot instead of Castro or Tatis.
2 runs there in that spot is unacceptable, now Myers will settle down and thrown a CG gem the rest of the way.
Bob,
I understand Castro not in the lineup with the early day game tomorrow and the lefty on the mound makes more sense to catch him them. Tatis on the other hand i dont understand.
Bob: I appreciate the sarcasm about Marlon Anderson. Very good. You’re right. They needed more than two there.-JD
And we didn’t drill him because?
That’s why we needed more than two. Maine is garbage.
JD-
Anderson has no place on this team and should be released, I’d rather the John Rodriguez’s, Jesus feliciano’s and Val Pacucci get a shot….
Feliciano can’t be relied upon he has looked awful lately with runners on…
Any rumors on the trade winds… He stands pat my head explodes
I too would like to know why the worst player on the team keeps getting starts in this important series.
You know EdFever those 3 names you mention just illustrate the problem the mets have. All 3 are either retreads or minor league lifers. As much as I’d love to see the mets make a move to upgrade at what price do they make a move?
I would not trade martinez, Niese, Parnell or kunz. These guys are untouchables in my book.
tomg,
thats a fair assesment and one could argue that Brad Holt is trying to add his name to that list very quickly.
tomg, Wright and Reyes are untouchables, those guys you mention are not. What they are prospects like Shawn Abner, Alex Ochoa, Alex Escobar, Bill Pulsipher, etc.
Schneider is really becoming quite the rally killer on this team.
I totally agree that they are retreads but so is Tatis, who is playing well because He’s hungry. I expect Tatis to tapper off but just as they play him as the hot hand they should do the same with the AAAA guys- rotate them through.
As i write this Anderson blows it again …..
I have a different stance on a trade I wouldn’t make a deal including F-mart or Niese but I would find a decent player to platoon with Chavez/Tatis so that between the three of them they can reduce the chances of diminished returns….
guys call scrubs but would better then anderson Blake, Ibanez, Byrd level guys
I meant untouchables in the mets farm system, wright and reyes are on the MLB level. Two different topics.
I agree with Ed, and wouldn’t mind a nice heady player to platoon in a left field rotation.
tomg – I just feel that an organization whose minor league system is ranked 27th in the Major Leagues by Baseball America, shouldn’t have any untouchables, let alone four of them.
Its a miracle this team is where it is when every night half of the lineup is filled with bench players. Who thought Church would be out so long when he got his bell rung way back in may. The lineup misses him badly.
But joe the flip side of that is should that same organization trade away the assets they do have ?
It’s an unenviable position any way you look at it.
I mentioned those four because they are the mets blue chip prospects. If you trade them than our farm system will be ranked last in the majors. We need to start building a farm system or the mets future won’t be a good one in there new park.
John Maine does not have an out pitch – he needs to.
I think Johan should show perez, maine and Pelfrey how to throw a changeup.
Regarding minor leaguers, the one I think has the best chance is Dan Murphy who is now the AA second baseman. BA over .300 12 HR and 60 RBI. Throw in 11 SB. Could be our second sacker next year.
Ray,
Where do you think Castillo is going?
Phillies are persistent tonight aren’t they -
I’d still like a Bradley or Guillen type great hitter but a killer mentality, sure they can be a problem but they can also be a problem for the opposition….. these guys wouldnt look at called strike threes and they entered the box looking for a hit not a walk
JM, hopefully his knees will recover enough so that somebody will take him, If he stays like this the only choice is DFA, speaking of which, its time to say goodbye to Marlin.
ITS OUTTA HERE!!!
Little man Reyes comes up huge.
Also too all those begging for the Mets to start drilling the Phillies for their antics. How do you think Philly fans feel about Jose’s antics there.
Thunder and Lightning have arrived here in Central CT – see you later or tomorrow.
That little cadillac jog to first was no big deal. Its funny I havent seen any Joses on coke rumors for awhile.
Ray,
I agree I have no problem with it as I understand it’s all part of today’s players and that’s not just baseball.
Big inning for Maine. Team just gave you a 3 run lead. You have 7-8-9 coming up need to set em down and get back in the dugout.
No question, David. Gotta shut the door.
A. Reyes looks like a scrappy player – Murphy could be tradebait – he’s blocked by Castillo and Reyes and they signed a 2B in the draft
I never expected Anderson to duplicate what he did last year, but he is utterly worthless. At least a guy like Endy gives you Gold Glove defense when he isn’t hitting – Marlon gives you nothing.
Good job, Schnieder. We need to add on here.
You always have room for a defensive replacement – But Anderson brings nothing offensively or defensively to the table and with Tatis and Easley as regulars Anderson becomes much more blaring a hole
It seems like every game the Mets leave a boat load of runners on base and they can’t seem to put away the oposition, unbelievable.
It really is amazing that the Mets have kept themselves within a game of first with corner OFs of Endy and Tatis. Lineup needs another legit bat, but I would always prefer a pitcher, starter or reliever.
If Marlon is here past the trading deadline, I will be shocked.
Just one more run or five would be nice here.-JD
I like that play. Beltran hasn’t been hitting that well and he gives them a chance to add on. I have no problem with Beltran bunting.-JD
That being said, it would have been better had Cancel gotten a hit there.-JD
Same old story, leaving more men on base. These last two games the Mets should have blown this team away.
I have a huge problem with that…who the hell is Cancel? If it was some big bat coming up then MAYBE I’d get it…but Beltran is paid to knock runs in. Plus it’s a righty/righty match up. That is just an unintelligent play and it drives me nuts when he does it
For those scoring at home, the Mets have left 11 runners on base tonight. It will be 13 if Easley makes an out here.-JD
fly ball gets a run – they really fail to elevate the ball alot
And it all comes full circle. Wagner comes into the lead with a three-run lead. They are cheering him now, but some of that has to be because of last night. He’s heard some boos here.-JD
Lets face it. The phillies have there problems and it’s obvious the mets have there’s. It will be the battle to the end who’s problem is worse. Easley has definitely come down to earth. Without church the mets have bench players playing left and right field, not a good situation.
Finally someone gets that Pickarino out, that little smurf.
Fair is fair. Nice hustle by Wagner to first to cover.
Classy gesture by Victorino. He could have run over Wagner and it would have been part of the game.-JD
Mets get Church back and hitting around .280 at least and picking up an outfielder who won’t make errors and can hit around .270-.280 ( Ibanez, Bloomquist, Byrd, Giles, Blake) I like our chances and we still have the farm for next year
Nice close by Wagner and nice comeback by the Mets not rolling over after last night.
JD- heres something for post game – Manuel said in his state of the union he would use the 2 hole to get struggling offensive players going – so why isn’t Beltran hitting two
Stillsane,
totally agree, i am pleasantly surprised. Lets see if Ollie will be the Ollie that pitches well in big games tomorrow, weather permitting.
Good win for the Mets- especially after last night’s disaster
Now, just win tomorrow and take our 4th consecutive series from the Phoolies…
All the bad feelings from yesterday will be washed away with a win tomorrow. Nice job by Johnny Maine tonight, our very own Phillies killer.
Well you dont get bonus points for how you win. Nice job by maine finally giving them 7 and then the bullpen shutting it down. Good to see Billy wiht the clean save. Hopefully we get the good Ollie tomorrow and take the series.
A couple of things:
-Pedro Martinez’s father died during the game. Martinez left the team and will be placed on the bereavement list. He will not pitch this weekend.
-Jerry Manuel wasn’t happy with Beltran’s bunt in the eighth inning, but said since he wasn’t hitting well he was trying to do something to help the team.
-Billy Wagner said his shoulder was fine after the game.
-John Maine said the difference was going back to attacking the strikezone.-JD
It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the Phillies swept the mets. -Tomg
It would have surprised me. Last night was unfortunate but unrelated to last year and well, you know, baseball happens.
That’s why we needed more than two. Maine is garbage. – Bob S CT.
Maine is not garbage. He is an excellent pickup that got us through tough starter times in ‘06, 15 game winner in ‘07 and will be a factor the rest of the way this year.
Schneider is really becoming quite the rally killer on this team. – Joe D
I kind of liked his hit and run double myself.
Classy gesture by Victorio. He could have run over Wagner and it would have been part of the game.-JD
This point by JD is one I was going to use myself in a different context. Everyone keeps mentioning the heart of the ‘86 team and I certainly agree. But that is not how the game is played anymore. Evidence is the way that guys run into second (when not a close play) instead of running over the second baseman they run out of the way.
I think the Mets take the east. Once in the playoffs it is a crapshoot unless there is a definite above all the rest team. Anything can happen. I would love to get Church back soon. And I nice pickup.
All in all a good tight game by the Mets. Who knows what happens last night if Wagner is available? Baseball happens. I think Manuel pulling Joe Smith was the wrong move. He got the out he was looking for if Reyes doesn’t screw it up. Still I aint killing him for it.
My sympathies to Pedro Martinez and his family.
I also think that Carlos’ bunt during the game to try and get something going for the team was timely and unselfish.
Pedro should take all the time he needs, hopefully when he comes back he can contribute.
Two quick things.
First off horrible news for Pedro really puts baseball in perspective.
Secondly i 100% agree with Beltran’s bunt, he is struggling and tried to help his team. Heck, Cancel smoke that ball unfortunately it was right at rollins 5 feet to the right and we’re talking two runs set up by beltran’s bunt.
I think it is time for us to give Delgado his due. He has taken a beating on this blog and other places. He worked pretty hard it seems to get back. He certainly is not the monster he was but there is enough semblance of that monster that opposing teams have to respect him again.
Give him his propers!!!
Note to all Met pitchers: It would be nice to see you guys pitch inside one of these days.
Maine tried to pitch inside—-twice. Both balls left the park in a hurry. He has to develop a pitch that moves away from lefties. Where has his changeup gone?
Scoop: I should have clarified…Up and In is what I should have said. The Mets have gotten hit, done corkscrews at the plate, and there hasn’t been one Phillie in my recollection who was planted on his butt. That’s what I would like to see more.
Scoop: Jenkins should never ever see a fastball anywhere close to the plate. Neither should Victorino
If Reyes gets knocked off the plate today for his jog around the bases after his HR, I hope some Met knocks a Philly down.
I don’t generally like these dances and showboating but last nite after losing that game so bad, it was a good time to do the dances.
Scoop: Rollins does the same thing when he runs around the bases. Victorino was the one who should be plunked anyway. He showed up the Mets the other night by clapping while looking at the Met dugout after he scored in the ninth.
