Mets Chat Room: Updating Billy edition.

July
21

Billy Wagner got his shoulder looked at this afternoon and will have it looked at again tomorrow. He had a problem getting loose Sunday in Cincy, but said it was nothing out of the ordinary. If there is a problem tomorrow, then a decision will be made on a MRI.

-Moises Alou to have surgery tomorrow on torn left hammy.

-Luis Castillo to begin baseball activities today in Port St. Lucie.

Despite Wagner’s blown saves, if he is hurt that would make it more difficult to make a trade for an OF since the Mets only possible trade commodity at the ML level is RP.

So for those hoping or expecting Wagner to be hurt, you are shooting your team in the foot by limiting their chances to grab an XMan or the like.

  2. JB

    What??

Why on earth would any Mets fan want any Mets player to be hurt? I certainly don’t and I don’t know of any fan who does.

Despite the wince, Wagner sure didn’t seem all that hurt when he blew through the Red in the bottom of the 9th yesterday. I hope he’s right and that it’s nothing.

I also doubt that the Mets would consider trading Wagner for an outfielder. Maybe Heilman and/or Smith), but not Wagner. As streak prone as he can be, he’s still at the top of the closers list. My guess is Heilman plus a bench guy (Endy or Nick Evans) for Ibanez.

JB: Only somebody with something missing upstairs roots for somebody to be hurt. Wagner did look good Sunday at Cincy and didn’t appear that concerned. ... No way the Mets are trading Wagner or Heilman at this stage.-JD

Maybe Wagner can learn to throw right handed again.

  5. Steve (The Original)

JD: I’d consider trading Heilman & a lower level prospect for Fuentes if it can be done and if Wagner is healthy. I like the idea of a lefty/righty set up situation with Duaner and Fuentes setting up Wagner.

I root for John Sterling to get hurt.

  7. Stillsane

Tiffany – Only for John and Susan Waldman to have laryngitis.

My thoughts on the Wagner situation….

    A) didn’t the same thing happen last year or was it the year before with having something similar like a “dead arm”

    B) at that same time, he got some rest and it seemed to work out ok

    C) rest again and come back fresh for the stretch run.

    D) avoid any potential closes over the next week by kicking the ever loving S#%t out of the Phils and Cards.

    done and done!!!!

I’d certainly like Castillo to be just hurt enough to never play for the Mets again. Not enough to effect his life outside of baseball, of course, but enough to never see Gimpy McBanjo in the orange-and-blue again.

My frustration with Alou is basically there as well but, for whatever its worth, he seems to have already done that to himself.

We’re getting close to the same on El Duque and Pedro.

for all wagner’s faults he is still one of the better relievers in the game.

  11. Ray Sadecki

Dan Murphy at AA has switched positions from third to second base. Reports are that he has adapted well there as he played second base in high school. Too lazy to give a link go to metsblog to see the story.

  12. Ray Sadecki

In 82 games, Murphy is hitting 306 with 11 HRs and 57 RBIs

Obviously next year the mets will be a different team. El Duke, Martinez, Alou, most likely Perez and the bench players will be gone. In the off season the mets need to get younger. I’ve had enough of these older players past there primes breaking down. That’s why the collapse happened last year.

  14. scoopcoop

If the Mets are gonna get younger the fan base will have to become alot more patient b/c it will take yrs for the Mets to have a young roster given their lack of depth and quality in the farm sys.

I don’t see the fans being patient and I don’t see the farm sys dramatically improving overnite, if ever. Omar has very little track record of finding and developing young players.

  15. scoopcoop

I see the Mets getting a little younger but I would bet Omar will still go out and get vets. There will be few players under 30 available via FA.

He won’t be able to bring up kids b/c he has very few who are ready or for that matter very few who are any good.

Saw an article in “Crain’s Business New York” the Mets have now sold 3.6 million tickets and expect to reach 4 million for the first (and last until we get an even newer park in 2050).
Ratings for SNY are up this year. I can’t stand the high cost of tickets nowadays but lots of people can buy them.

I cheered with Buffalo Bills linebacker put Charger Keith Lincoln out of the 1964 AFL championship game. But I was only 10 and I am sorry. I never wish any athlete injury. Not even Jeff Gordon. Hope Wonderboy crashes every week and finishes 43rd but Jeffy escapes safe and sound. And sends me Brooke’s phone number.

  17. scoopcoop

Sold 4 MM but I wonder about the attendance figures. It seems shea is half empty a good part of the games.

  18. dave

    scoop is right.

i do not expect our gm to change his stripes and go get young guys, however, hopefully they will still be useful

he also needs to not give vets with injuries long contracts.

if we lose ollie we will need a pitcher and an OF.

if church is damaged that is 2 of and a pitcher.

that is a lot of change. that is not even counting giving delgado his release.

    looks like a busy offseason

  19. dave

    speaking of prices.

did anyone catch the prices for the football giants?

    wow
