Mets Chat Room: Maine trying to straighten it out.

July
18

John Maine began the season full of promise after winning 15 games last season. He’s won eight, but has been far from stellar. He has two no-decisions and a loss in his last three starts, not completing six in any of them.

Maine’s pitch count is way out of whack for the innings he’s going. He’s usually close to 100 around the fifth, and that’s what he should have after seven strong.

The Mets are going after 11 straight tonight.

Hoping for a good start from Maine tonight. The mets will really need him down the stretch so hopefully the couple days off helped his body relax some and he can come out of the break pitching well.

  2. John Delcos

David: Yeah, I consider him one of the keys. He has underperformed. We all get on Perez (including me), but Maine hasn't been red hot this year, either.-JD

  3. David

Well looks like Jenny Finch I mean Bronson Arroyo has his stuff tonight he's been very good of late, hopefully the bats can get it going.

  4. Ray Sadecki

Even though Tatis was thrown out at 2nd base, I like the way these guys are putting pressure on the defense. It took a perfect throw to get him. Keppinger is becoming a real Met killer. Who did we trade him for? Anderson Hernandez wasnt it?

  5. John Delcos

Ray: The Mets traded Keppinger to Kansas City, July, 19, 2006, for Ruben Gotay. The thinking on dealing Keppinger was he ``didn't fit in'' with Minaya's type of player. Supposedly, he wasn't athletic enough. He's only hitting around .300. He never got a chance with the Mets.-JD

  6. David

Well in all fairness the Royals gave him away as well.

  7. Ray Sadecki

Ok, thanks for clearing that up, John. I bet Keppinger has better range at second than Castillo. BTW, didnt the Mets let Gotay go for the same reason?

  8. David

Didnt Randolph have issues with Gotay ?

  9. David

Can anyone verify Maine's pitch count web says 67 is that correct if so not ideal through 4 but better than he's been.

  10. edfever

    JD

with the pagan news and Church still up in the air any word on Trot Nixon might not have been hitting but he was a gamer

  11. John Delcos

Ray: A potted plant has more range at second these days than Castillo. And, to David, Willie might have had issues with Gotay, but tying themselves into the Castillo deal didn't help Gotay's chances any. No matter how you slice it, the Castillo deal is a Hoover.-JD

  12. John Delcos

edfever: Good call on bringing up Nixon. He had hernia surgery and is gone for the year.-JD

  13. John Delcos

David: Maine's count is at 67 going into the fifth. Better, but still not great.-JD

  14. edfever

And so was Kaz., every team has their spot the Mets is 2B been a black hole for years…..

  15. David

Oh John please dont get me wrong i think the Castillo signing was ridiculous and one that i see the Mets having to eat in the very near future.

  16. edfever

Castillo will be an insurance collection as he retires with injuries and A. Reyes takes over, I like Reyes he's a young Castillo Pesky/fast enough

  17. edfever

Maybe its the park and he's afraid of the long ball but Maine really seems to be nibbling instead of being aggressive

  18. edfever

two of those balls to griffey were strikes

  19. John Delcos

edfever: This is a lousy inning for Maine. They haven't hit him hard, but two walks and the play by Wright have killed him. He needs to put away Dunn. Down 4-2 is a lot different than down 7-2. It's still a reasonable game here.-JD

  20. John Delcos

Unraveling. Another gift run. Here comes Schoeneweis.-JD

  21. John Delcos

Close up of Maine on the TV. He looks a cross between angry and frustrated.-JD

  22. Ray Sadecki

Another disappointing start by Maine. He better step it up. Met killer Kepp in the middle of the rally, of course.

  23. paulunde

You know… I think "Coin Flip" has become more reliable than Maine. What has happened to this guy?

  24. David

Yeah john its been pretty frustrating to watch Maine pitch lately and today was no different. Good job by Scho to keep them in the game. But Maine needs to fix whatever is ailing him because the Mets cannot afford him to pitch this way down the stretch.

  25. paulunde

    John-

I'm sure Maine is very angry and frustrated. I saw him interviewed in the locker room after his last start and he was very abrupt with the interviewers. Maine has been on a downward slide for quite some time now.

All along I believed our starting pitching was going to be the thing that delivered us to the promised land – or at least the playoffs. But I think we've now seen that Santana is a good- not a great pitcher, Pedro gets hurt at the drop of a hat, Maine has become very weak, and "Coin Flip" is always a gamble! In spite of all this the club has turned it around and been on a tear.

  26. Stillsane

Maine seems to hit a point in the last few games where he looks uncomfortable (labored) on the mound and then he slows down and really looks out of rhythym.

As for Nixon, that seems to have been the best kept secret. Wonder if they got him as damaged goods.

The Mets also gave Arroyo a seven pitch inning. Certainly did not help their cause.

  27. edfever

What about a package for Ibanez and Washburn

  28. Annie Savoy

John – Was Maine a victim of the Billy Joel concert, too? All these million dollar arms being thwarted by an aging Long Island piano player – what's the world coming to?

  29. edfever

Ollie and maine have coin flipped

  30. edfever

wow man on third no outs and cant score been awhile since that happened….. It's funny how some guys have your number, Arroyo has pitched so bad he out of trade rumors but he kills the Mets

  31. David

Arroyo has been very good of late. Pretty sure he won his last 3 starts going into the break.

  32. Stillsane

Why does it look like that Met pitchers are being squeezed tonight? It does not look like the home plate umpire has a consistent strike zone tonight. The walks are the Met's pitchers' fault tonight, but, admitedly it is tough to through a corner strike when you don't know what one is.

  33. Stillsane

    that's throw…

  34. edfever

    Arroyo
    6/2 – 4.1 innings 6 runs
    6/7- 4.2 innings 4 runs
    6/12- 6 innings 0 runs
    6/18- 6.1 innings 6 runs
    6/24- 1 inning 10 runs
    6/29- 6 innings 1 run
    7/4- 6 innings 1 run
    7/10- 5 innings 5 runs

  35. David

He won his last 3 starts thats what i said.

  36. edfever

Maine definatley got squeezed buyt he was also nibbling

  37. edfever

ok if you call that good – i call that two go outings in a bad season myself and those two games were against cleveland and washington both in last

  38. edfever

I'll give him credit for the 6/12 game against stl.

  39. Ray Sadecki

Lot of bad news on the injury front today. Even Nixon out for the year. I thought they were hiding him on the DL so they wouldnt have to DFA him. Arroyo always seems to pitch well against the Mets.

  40. Stillsane

Has there been any word on who the Mets will use as a fifth starter since Pedro is a maybe at best and Armas is on the DL. Are they going to look at Vargas again? Also, the corner outfield situation still looks bleak at this point for the long haul, especially as Church situation lingers. Anderson's forced basket catch right now further reinforced my concern.

  41. edfever

    Nixon out wheres that

  42. Josh

    R.I.P. Winning Streak…

Oh well, can't win every game. Just take the next 2 games and win the series…

  43. Stillsane

Edfever – Check John D's comment above.

Oh well, Congrats to Mets on 10 game streak!

Still would love a Nady – Yates for Heilman and another lesser player trade if they could swing it.

  44. Ray Sadecki

Yeah, It couldnt last forever. Nice little run there. 2 more with the Reds then on to Philly.

  45. Dan Gurney

oh well, you can't win them all. we should have lost last
night so I can't complain too much. I just hope Maine straightens himself out in his next start. But he is having a better year than Kris Benson so we can't complain too much. Time to root for a Marlins comeback and Padres win.

  46. edfever

    JD

heres a name to bring up Pablo Ezuno just became FA… 33 y/o right hander hitting .390 against lefties and .275 over all- super sub type all positions refused assignment by the Sox

  47. edfever

    Ozuna – miss spelled

  48. edfever

    Ozuna miss spelled

  49. dave

the sny talking heads were saying Maine's shoulder fly's out so he cannot drive.

I believe ronnie said the same some time ago.

I hope he can fix his mechanics cause we need him

  50. Tiffany

    ...Paging Rick Peterson…Rick Peterson…Please pick up line one…Rick Peterson…

  51. OS

Regarding Bullpen sessions that Santana missed. Why didn't they take the Pitchers that needed work to their minor league affiliates in NY? It's not like they don't send major league players there at all. They use it as rehab assignment for injured players ready to join the club.

  52. marty

Jose Reyes back to bad habits when batting left-handed. The bat is held back, but the hands are way in front of his shoulder ansd then he has to "hitch" as he pulls his hand backward before swinging . He has to hit THROUGH the ball.

David Wright is still "bailing out" on his swing. Instead of hitting off his vback leg, he should begin hitting off his front leg aand drive his swinfg thru the ball.

  53. Stillsane

The missed bullpen session excuse is just that. An excuse. The are always ways that players can get their work in if they need to. Whether or not they chose to make the effort to do them is another story. I cannot believe that if Santana was concerned about missing his bullpen work that the Mets would not have made arrangements with any number of places that have a mound and a plate 60'6" away. I just hope it was not a vanity thing where he did not do his session because he could not use "his" bullpen.

  54. lasvegasdave

Did marty say "Hit off the front foot"? Bailing out I understand, but you have to stay back and stay tall NOT hit off the front leg. Bailing out? That I agree with. He does that very often
