Mets Chat Room: The Second Half begins Edition.

The second half is underway, and the hope is the Mets will give Johan Santana a little more run support this time.
I picked the Mets to win the division coming out of spring training, and I see no reason to back off that now. They have questions, no doubt, but who doesn’t?
I posted several questions the other day and I was reminded of one other. Mike Pelfrey. He needs to keep it going. He was my surprise of the first half.
I’m still concerned about Pedro Martinez’s durability and I’m certainly not holding my breath on Orlando Hernandez.

Talked to a couple of the Cincy writers and they suggested the Mets stay away from Adam Dunn. ``All or nothing,’’ they said. However, the jury is still out whether I should get the fried Twinkies tonight.-JD
This just in: Hernandez was injured in his rehab start and left the game after one inning. Trying to track down more details.-JD
“All or nothing” sounds like Moises Alou. When he’s healthy we get all, when he’s hurt we get nothing.
Fried Twinkies: bad for your arteries. Maybe get some tofutti.
Duque update: Dave Shultz of the Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin emailed me saying Hernandez stepped awkwardly on the bag while covering first base in the first inning. Hernandez then had trouble on a ball hit back to him by the next batter. He did not come out for the second.-JD
Delgado’s homer was his 449th, tying him with Jeff Bagwell for 33rd on the career list.-JD
Johan should give back some of his salary.
That is rediculous. They give our ace the lead and he can’t hold onto to it.
Wow, I almost fell over… Wright didn’t charge a ball a bunt down the third base line… Willie Randolph must be rolling over in his grave
Seriously what the hell is wrong with Johan? This is pathetic.
Why is it Orlando Hernandez can’t stay healthy and his half brother can? Must be his mother’s side of the family that is fragile.
Santana is a good second half pitcher, isn’t he? Or is that “was”? Only one start. One inning.
Phillies got Blanton, eh? We’ll catch them anyways.
Santana done for the night: 92 pitches in four innings. Five runs, six hits, three walks. Tonight isn’t an issue about not getting any runs.-JD
Well if the Mets pull this game out to extend the streak, I’ll be seriously impressed by this team
It was Hernandez’s right foot, and the Mets are now saying he felt some discomfort while warming up. If that is so, then why did he start in the first place?-JD
FERNANDO TATIS!!!
JD- Is it just me or does losing create more blogging than winning does? Seems when they lose you get over a hundred posts. When they are going well? Not so much.
The ball just jumps out of this stadium, much like cbb… with that being said, if a phillie wins another mvp with inflated stats from the band box I am going to be really disappointed.
I’d be curious to see what our homerun count has been in the past month as compared to the start of the season. I remember commenting earlier that our homerun production felt feeble.
It sure is nice to see the guys respond and not just lay down and die like they did earlier this season.
JT
To clm: I’ve noticed that, too. Hard to explain why, but that is the case.-JD
Yup you think winning would pack the house while losing would send bloggers to other past times. Maybe just a good way to vent. Love it either way.
Good job by Feliciano to get Griffey and preserve the lead. Be nice to get Wagner another run or two.
I love that they just fought right back after Santana got waxed. Win or lose, this team is just playing differently.
This is one of the annoying things about Heilman…many of the times where he implodes it’s with two outs and he loses his focus and starts walking people like an idiot. I dont care how well this guy looks in consecutive outings, I still never trust him
I’ve said this all year so it just not tonight. Santana is ripping the mets off big time. I wonder who Johan is going to point the finger to tonight, probably Chavez, he should have caught that laser beam that one hopped the wall in a second. I figure the other outfielders should have caught those bombs also. Hey Johan, you my friend is over rated. I knew there had to be a reason why the red Sox and the yankees didn’t make a real play for santana.
Oh well, 9 game streak was nice. I just hope this team now doesn’t lose 9 in a row.
tomg- i agree, santana has been a huge letdown
There is no way that Santana is a huge letdown when you’ve seen Foy, Fregosi, Foster, Bonilla, Saberhagen, Coleman, Alomar, Vaughn and Piersall. But tonight wasn’t very good. But the game isn’t over.
dan gurney- i think it’s over now.
and i’m still thinking santana is a letdown, considering he was supposed to win 20 games this year. but i agree that all of the above were letdowns as well.
You’re never out of it in this bandbox joke of a ball park. At least artificial turf has disappeared from the National League.
Is Cordero Spanish for Wagner?
You guys are crazy. Johan had a 2.84 ERA in the first half, and even after getting bombed his ERA is still 3.10. I wish I was that big of a “letdown” at what I do.
Come on keith you know his ERA should be sub 1 with 150 K’s and 15 wins by now….
Sarcasm aside ridiculous fight being shown by this club.
wow,
maybe this team really does have the old magic back. All I know is the mets bet a get a few more insurance runs with wagner pitching in the bottom of the ninth because there going to need it.
What exactly were your expectations? Did you want him to change water to wine on the mound? End world hunger? Find a cure for cancer?
If you told me Johan would have a 2.84 ERA at the break in Spring Training I would have signed up for that in a heartbeat. There were 9 games (NINE!!!) where he gave up 3 runs or less and either lost or got a no decision (only 2 of the nine did he give up 3 runs.)
So he was sitting at 8-7 when he realistically could have been 12-5, AT LEAST.
Oh, and while I was typing up that post… awesome rally. Great job by the Irregulars.
Ya gotta believe!!!
Keith,
At the very least i would of expected the cure for cancer
David,
Seriously… he really went in the tank once he got all that cash. Just another selfish ballplayer.
LOL, Keith—awesome imagery.
And after this game.. I believe. Just awesome and without Jose ever getting on base!
JT
Just wanted to make a few random points.
I am so glad Citifield’s dimensions are going to be respectable. I feel bad for Cincy fans having to watch little league baseball.
FYI: Delgado’s batting average is about 20 points higher than Ryan Howard’s. Just saying.
TIED FOR FIRST!!!
(tied for) first place New York Mets!! A rally started by Argenis Reyes after being down 0-2 with 1 out and 2 runs down. Delgado is hitting now. First 10 game winning streak since 1991 (let’s leave out the “lose 14 of 17 collapse they had in August 1991).
Can you say 1st place? Sure I knew you could.
By the way while there was this arguement about how awful Santana was tonight (there was a little 8 game layoff for him) the Mets won the game AND are sharing 1st with the Phillies. And Wagner had a 1,2,3 inning. He now has 23 saves in 29 chances. He aint Eckersly in his prime but he aint Benitez either.
I have to laugh after reading some of the posts tonight.
First game back having won 9 in a row ( now 10 ) many of you
you seem to be ready to jump off the Whitestone any second now.
Look as long as the Mets don’t lose any ground by next Tuesday when they face the Phillies at Shea I will be happy.
3 of 4 against the Reds would be great especially after taking game 1.
For the rest of the season it’s all about winning each series. 2 out 3 everytime out and the Phillies will be in the rearview mirror at the end of August.
It is really amazing how lately this team never gives up.
Much different than when Willie was running the show.
Keith
a cure for cancer would be a start. then world piece.
we expect more than a sub 3 era for 20 mill
it would be nice if he could finish a game too
tomg,
I know your heart is in the right place, why dont you come aboard for the big win here. Stop with with your fliipin and floppin. get with the progam already. are you a mets fan or not. get with the program man.
When the Mets lose, there is more to complain about because there is more to criticize on what is wrong with the team.
When the Mets Win, it’s hard to find holes to talk about.
Makes sense to me. Just like any news, most of journalism reports the bad. Most people are more interested in the bad. Look at how Warhol’s artwork from his “Death and Disaster” Series approaches this. Warhol’s series hits the nail on the head about peoples’ attitudes regarding viewing other peoples’ misfortunes.
I know Warhol’s art probably has nothing to do with how the Mets winning or losing constitutes less or more blog action but this seems to be one way how how it might be looked at.
To expect the Mets to come off of three days off and play perfectly crisp BB shows a lack of understanding of how the game works. Just ask the Rockies how they felt going into the WS w/8 days off. that killed any chance they had. I was surprised that the bats were not off, except for Reyes who’s timing was bad.
I was not surprised that Santana was off given his 8 days b/w starts where his previous was shortened by rain.
So that no one is surprised, don’t be surprised if Maine struggles tonite given his long layoff-remember his first start of the yr. He stunk against the Braves.
In fact after the game santana said that he did not get a BP in b/c of the Billy Joel concerts-so add that to the 8 days off and you get a pitcher who lacked command and stunk it up.
It happens to be 1 mo since Willie got fired and they are in 1st place.

Dude,
I don’t flip flop. I am a met fan and I don’t know what program your talking about but it’s my opinion that when you go out and trade 4 prospects and than pay 20+ mil a year it isn’t asking much as a fan for a guy to pitch like an ace. I haven’t seen it yet. I didn’t see you tonight on this blog until after the game was over and the only thing you post is directed towards me, maybe you should be the one to get with the program.
Reb: I disagree. Sometimes watching the Mets can be like looking at a Warhol painting.-JD
tomg, I am with the program. I dont count the Mets out when the game is not over yet. I dont predict a nine game losing streak when a nine game winning streak is ongoing. When everything is fine, you cheer the Mets on, but at the first bit of trouble, you go into your gloom and doom rants again. btw I didnt comment during the game because I wasnt home when the game was on. I taped it. Have a nice day. :)
