If I was Omar Minaya I would seriously consider trading Wagner in the off season and signing K-Rod who is much better and younger and who will file for free agency next year.
Wagner never does well when he does not start an inning. This was no exception. I agree that he causes some concern, but, for now he is the best that the Mets has got in closing games until they either trade for someone else in which case Wagner has to be part of the trade, or, they have someone from within step up and take over the job. How long is Wagner signed for any way?
Stillsane,
why would the Mets trade for someone else when K-Rod is going to file for free agency in the off season? The only problem with Wagner is i think he has a no trade clause in his contract. I can see wagner blocking any trades the Mets might have in the works. Wagner in a big game stinks. I do not trust wagner anymore, I’ve seen enough.
Wagner is signed thru next year. But i’m not sure if he has an option for 2010 or not. Even if the Mets got to the WS, I bet he would blow a big game or two for them. Having nothing to do with relievers, but I believe Vlad Guerrero is a FA after this season. I wouldn’t mind seeing him in a Met uni next year.
I know we were all holding our breath when wagner came in with the one run lead. Right now i would feel more confident with Heilman or Joe Smith closing for them. Why do we always get these chokers to close for us?
Ray: It’s because in NY we’ve been spoiled by watching Rivera. Truth is most closers are not lights out all the time and they can choke in big situations. Take Trevor Hoffman for instance generally regarded as one of the best ever. He’s blown enough big saves in his career. Eckersley blew the big save against the Dodgers, etc..
tomg – What I was saying is that for the rest of the season unless something drastic happened, chances are, Wagner is the closer.
Steve, Yes every closer get beat once in a while, even the great Rivera. Billy gets beat in every big game he pitches. He has been scored upon in each of his last 3 all star outings, being a big part of the last 2 losses.Career ERA in All Star games is now over 10. His ERA in the 2006 playoffs was 16.87. He was horrible in the postseason for the Astros as well, and He got a choker tag in Philly too. Benitez was more reliable than this guy, and thats saying alot.
Just checked the numbers. Benitez combined postseason ERA is 3.56. He never made an all star appearance.
I’m not trying to defend him, but he did have 3 saves in the playoffs in 06. He did lose game 6 of course, but he didn’t blow the save. But I understand, it does seem like every big game he blows.
there’s no way around it. billy wagner was/IS an embarassment to all mets fans.
Tom G: I spoke to one of my buddies in California who is a devout Angels fan. K-Rod’s fastball is down 3 MPH and his slider has been less menacing. He apparently is also the type of closer who can give you a heart attack while watching him pitch. Plus after the year he is going to be asking for a ton of $$$. I think the Mets will suffer thru Wagner for another year, unless he blows the deciding game in the NLDS, NLCS, or WS…in that case, he couldn’t come back next year to Citifield. My hope is that he actually GETS a chance to blow the deciding game in any of those series! :-)
Billy the Kid = Sloppy
billy the kid- thanks for the second place finish last year!!! GOOD TIMES!!!
