When we were in Philly last week GM Omar Minaya said Cleveland GM Mark Shapiro told him the Mets had the pieces to get the CC Sabathia trade done if they wanted.
One of those pieces is Fernando Martinez, and I’m beginning to think if there’s a delay in Ryan Church returning after the All-Star break that he might be the one the Mets choose rather than give up what’s left of their farm system. Of course, if they could swing Matt Holliday, I’d be interested.
The prices for Holliday and Adam Dunn or anybody of real substance will be steep, and the Mets need to hold onto what they have. It is also like they’ve never promoted from within before, either.
“We did that with (Carlos) Gomez,” Minaya said. “We have shown we will do that. He has to be ready to play.”
The Mets could bring up Martinez for a look-see now and see what they get until the trade deadline. If he has trouble then they would still have time to make a trade.
