I am very saddened to hear the news about the passing of Bobby Murcer.
I watched Murcer play as a kid and delighted in telling him that when I covered the Yankees. He enjoyed hearing people remembering him as a player.
I also imitated his stance and he found that amusing. It sounds so cliche, but Murcer was a regular guy.
He loved to talk about Mickey and Thurman and his playing days, but he also liked shooting the breeze in the dugout before games.
We talked mostly baseball, but other things as well. And, I always left those conversations feeling a little happier. It was because Bobby had a way of being engaging and making those around him feel important and special.
Bobby liked people, but I think the best thing to say about him is that people liked Bobby.
The world is a little sadder today.-JD
