Greetings folks. This afternoon the Mets are going for eight in a row. Can you believe it? They are finally playing the way they told us they would.
Pedro Martinez showed something encouraging in Monday’s start at Philly, and another strong start would go a long way toward further juicing the confidence of this team.
UPDATE, 5:27 p.m.: The Mets just announced that Pedro Martinez left the game in the fourth inning because of right shoulder soreness. It was a “precautionary measure” according to the team. More information as I get it.

Great blog, subscribed to your rss feed. Thanks.
In a non related Mets note.
Today is the 29th anniversiary of disco demolition night at
the old Comiskey park.
Not sure baseball wants anyone to remember.
Rosenthal on fox reported that church’s migraines were not due to his two concussion by the Cleveland head injury clinic and therefore it looks like he will return sooner than later. If this is true than that is a huge break for the mets. Also they said Pagan could be back soon also and El Duke which also would be huge.
Off Topic some sad baseball news – Bobby Murcer died today.
Just announced. Rest in peace Bobby, you were a great guy.
What are the chances between El Duque and Pedro they can fill that spot the rest of the way? I’m hoping the break cures whatever forced Pedro out.
For those not listening to Fox broadcast, it’s the groin, but they’re just being careful. I’ve been there, those things can flare up randomly for a while after you think it’s better, but generally are better again in a day or so.
So if they burn the pen today, does Santana relieve Pelfrey tomorrow?
P.S. Nick Evans has no business being in the majors, he tries hard but he is simply overmatched.
“Free agent pitcher Victor Zambrano worked out for the second straight day at the Yankees’ minor league complex. The right-hander threw a 35-pitch bullpen session.”
hahahahahahahahaha
Bobby was a class act. He will be missed.
I had Elliott Maddux in the pool. Damn.
Manuel already said Santana could be used Sunday.
On Evans yes he is overmatched right now and he will go down when Church is ready but the time he is spending with the Mets now will make him a better player.
When you play kids you will take sum lumps.
Annie 3 Mets games in 3 days on TV. I bet you are having a good time.
Hmm now it’s right shoulder tightness, so much for the “groin report” form Rosenthall.
UPDATE: Haddix loses no-hitter in the 12th.
I also heard it was a groin issue but looking at pedro’s face when the camera was on Pedro looked like the face he had last two years ago when he knew his shoulder was shot. Hopefully the it’s nothing serious and the all star break will heal his shoulder. It’s not sounding good though.
Phillies lost 10-4 to the Dbax as Eaton got beat up again. Mets now a half game out with a chance to be in first at the break. 8 wins in a row.
Manuel said after the game that it was a hip/groin issue and that Pedro was trying not to have that bother him by taking a smaller stride and therefore that caused him to put more strain on his shoulder leading to him to experience tightness (hence his low velocity).
It was good they took him out of the game before he did something to his arm/shoulder. But unless he is 100% with his hip/groin, they should keep him out. Remember that it was a hip injury that messed up his shoulder in 06.
Elduque can come in and replace him…wink…wink…
Manuel also said he did not expect Pedro to miss a start. But we have heard this before…
As far as Church, I think the Mets should have the guy rehab for at least a week to make sure that these migraines or whatever it is does not come back before they even think of bringing him back…
Said this the other day about him and holds true today as well. But Carlos Muniz was huge both games he picked up the starters and bridged the gap to the 7th where Manuel could begin to mix and match, great job by the kid.
BigPelf goes for 6 straight tomorrow.
It looks like Pedro is done. Its too bad. I like him but he is a 5th right now who cant do 5 innings. What is the point?
Muniz will be very good… eventually. While he’s young, he’ll be a little erratic but… if you don’t let him work through the erratic times, he’ll never get good.
Hopefully, the Mets are finally learning from the past here.
Too bad about Pedro but… if the Mets medical staff says “he won’t miss a start” it means “he’s done for the season”. We, too, must learn from the past.
not that I believe the mets when they say pedro is going to be fine, but do people actually watch and understand what was happening on the field today?
Dave, pedro did not go 5 b/c Manuel took him out of the game b/c he did not want him to hurt himself. It was clear from their body langauge that pedro wanted to stay in and Manuel wanted him out.
You make it sound like he can’t go 5 b/c he does not have the jewels or something. He clearly was hurt, throwing the ball 85 or less…He does not have to be more than the 5 guy…and besides who else can be the 5th starter?
Muniz is ok…nothing spectacular. Lets not forget he blew a game in StL just a week ago. But for Mike C any young guy is great…I suppose if A reyes goes 4-4 in the next couple of games you will say play him everyday.
Scoop
Unfortunately I did not see the game yesterday, but correct me if I am wrong. Since Pedro has been back has he started the 6th?
That is my point. He has been back for a while now and is struggling to last in a game to be relevant. I like his attitude and I think he adds a lot of good emotion to the team, but if you cannot last even to 6 you have no pen, no matter how good it is.
Remember last year? At the beginning of the year we had one of the best pens in the game. At the end of the year they were so burned they were completely useless.
That is why we got Santana. 1 to get an ace 2 to save the pen. I think a lot of why we are winning now is that OP is pitching again and BigPelf is now a pitcher. If Maine can figure out what is wrong we will have a pretty good staff and will not be looking to score 6 or more every game to win.
Muniz isn’t young… he’s 27. While that may be young for a human being, he is no longer young enough to be considered a prospect. He’s a solid BP arm, nothing more.
With Johan, Ollie’s resurgence, Pelfrey blossoming, and Maine, Pedro is fine as the 5th starter. Whatever you get from him is gravy. You have to remember, Pedro missed a lot of time with the hammy injury, so he is still building up his stamina.
